While I love and embrace the digital age, there seems to be something less romantic about gazing at an iphone to see pictures and videos. With more than 800 billions images and videos created every year. Wouldn’t it be nice to create art from some of them – art that you can physically engage with and form a connection to.
Invented in 1833 the zoetrope was kind of like a 19th century gif viewer. Strips of images were placed in a cylinder which was then spun. When viewed through the slits in the sides, the images began to animate.
I wanted to make the zoe modern while retaining and enhancing its interactive quality. It was important to me that it looks cool just sitting there, so I put the art on the outside and lit the zoëtrope from within.
