Latest Updates From The Expedition
Short Summary
Pushing the limits of human endurance by snorkeling in unforgiving arctic waters requires lots of specialized gear—lots of dive gear, including safety equipment, which translates into epic excess baggage costs…
Our team of ten female explorers has recently returned from conducting a proof-of-concept expedition to Newfoundland, Labrador, Western Greenland and Iceland. During the past year, we raised 80 percent of our expedition costs. But, we still owe $50,000 for this expedition.
We’re raising global awareness about disappearing sea ice and ocean change in the Arctic, and we need your help to pay off our debt.
In July 10-27, 2014, the 2014-2016 Sedna Epic Expedition successfully ran its sea trials in arctic waters filled with pack ice and icebergs. Using diver propulsion vehicles and supported by the 116-foot MV Cape Race, we demonstrated that snorkelers can successfully ‘go the distance’ in coastal waters and in open waters more than 9,000 feet deep. Intent on firsts, we even snorkeled across the Arctic Circle!
We also conducted marine mammal and sea bird surveys during the expedition. Using a remotely operated vehicle and mobile touch aquariums, we brought the ocean ‘to eye level,’ delivering a hands-on ocean educational outreach program to the Inuit community of Nain, Labrador. In St. John’s, Newfoundland, we spoke to 49 young women, ages 16 and 17, about pursuing careers in science, exploration and movie making.
This proof-of-concept expedition is crucial to reaching our ultimate goal of snorkeling Canada’s Northwest Passage—all 3,000 kilometers of it—during the summer of 2016. We can’t achieve one without the other, so your support is essential to the success of both of our missions.

What We Need and What You Get
We need $50,000 to cover the final costs
of our expedition for 2014. That money
covers the cost of the following:
- Gear for
snorkeling in arctic waters
- Global
rescue insurance
- Freight
costs for gear
- Filming
the expedition
- Scientific
equipment for outreach and education
- Diver
propulsion vehicles to scoot along with in the snorkel zone
The Impact
The impact of our all-female
expedition is both local and global. During the expedition, we’re reaching out
to the communities we visit. Simultaneously, we’re connecting to a global
community who is supporting and following our international expedition.
Immersing ourselves in the issue of disappearing sea ice, we’ll translate our
findings into educational and awareness programs of ocean change.
The expedition will
serve as a "call to action" for citizens of the world, including
youth, providing aboriginal and scientific knowledge to inform governments of
the world on implementing science-based policies to mitigate global warming.
The expedition will also serve to inspire women and girls to think "big,"
and to follow their dreams, no matter how out-of-the box they may appear...
Providing
educational and life role models, we’ll reach out to Inuit and Inuvialuit women
and girls, empowering them to build resilient communities to mitigate the
impacts of societal and climate change.
