20UNDER40: Re-Inventing the Arts and Arts Education for the 21st Century is an anthology of critical discourse that addresses the impending generational shift in arts leadership by publishing twenty essays about the future of the arts and arts education written by young and emerging arts professionals under the age of forty. In the process of doing so, 20UNDER40 brings the voices of young arts leaders out of the margins and into the forefront of our cultural dialogue.

20UNDER40 Needs You!

True to the DIY ethos of the times (and the renegade spirit of the project) on December 1, 2010 20UNDER40 is due to be self-released as a 400 page hardcover book (ISBN: 978-1-4520-6739-1) and ebook (ISBN: 978-1-4520-6740-7). Now in its final stages of production, 20UNDER40 needs your support in procuring the resources necessary to reach the broadest audience, inspire the richest dialogue, and have the greatest impact on the field. A grassroots project to its core, 20UNDER40 is now seeking $15,000.00 to:

  • Fund a marketing/publicity campaign designed to reach all corners of the arts and cultural sector—as well as the broader non-arts public;

  • Support the authors represented within the anthology with the resources necessary for them to engage audiences by participating in public appearances;

  • Redesign the 20UNDER40 website to act as a hub of dialogue concerning the future of the arts and arts education—including an interactive discussion platform for each chapter within the printed anthology, and;

  • Coordinate a publication launch that will bring together the 20UNDER40 community through workshops, author readings, panel discussions, and a celebratory launch party/performance.

More About 20UNDER40:

Now a decade into the 21st Century the way we make, teach, understand, experience, and support the arts is in constant flux. As the arts continue to change in the decades ahead, it will become increasingly more important for the field to tap the ingenuity of its youngest professionals. Ironically, due to low pay, unreliable career paths, frustrating glass ceilings, and a lack of agency and autonomy, the arts sector is currently experiencing an exodus of Gen Xers and Millennials just when it needs the 21st Century insights of these talented young leaders the most.

Inspiring a New Discussion:

Over 300 young arts professionals under the age of forty submitted their ideas for the future of the field in response to 20UNDER40's initial call for chapter proposals. The twenty chapters selected for the anthology represent the most innovative ideas about the future of the arts articulated by a devoted cadre of authors from all corners of the field. The chapters these authors have written intelligently tackle the challenges we now face in the arts while offering bold solutions and renewed hope for the future.
