#MakeFilmEqual is a campaign using 104 films new feature documentary film, The Social Model to catalyse change towards greater equality for disabled talent in the film industry.
"59 non-disabled actors have earned Oscar nominations for playing disabled characters. History suggests that an Oscar-nominated actor in a physically or emotionally afflicted role has nearly a 50 percent shot of a win” (Indiewire)
"14% of people in employment aged 16-64 considered themselves disabled. However, the 2016 Creative Skillset employment census shows that only 0.3% of the total film workforce are disabled” (Office of National Statistics)
The Social Model is a feature documentary looking at how disabled people are portrayed as victims, villains or martyrs in film and television and how able-bodied filmmakers and actors have exploited negative depictions of disability to win awards and gain stardom. The film examines the emerging grass roots disability film movement in the UK and how disabled people are fighting back against outdated and outmoded portrayals of disability.
The Social Model is produced by 104 films, the UK's leading production company and training provider focussing on disability. Established in 2004 with the aim of creating a tectonic shift in the representation of disabled people both in front of and behind the camera. You can read more about us in The Guardian here https://www.theguardian.com/small-business-netw... .
104 films co-produce critically acclaimed award winning films such as the BAFTA nominated Notes on Blindness and I Am Breathing, plus the multi award winning Special People which was hailed as a “Milestone in Mainstream Cinema” by the Guardian for its use of disabled cast. We were also involved with films such as Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and the searing documentary Unrest which was shortlisted for the 2018 Best Documentary Oscar. This year we'll be making the first ever film by a deaf director entirely in sign language Retreat for the BBC's ifeatures programme.
104 films run training schemes, short film programmes and initiatives for disabled film talent. We have worked with organisations such as the British Film Institute, Creative Skillset, BAFTA and Directors UK to support their work in disability and film.
What We Need & What Your Support Will Do
We need to raise at least £10,000 to launch The Social Model and the #MakeFilmEqual campaign in Autumn 2018 and a further £10,000 to sustain the #MakeFilmEqual campaign through to the end of 2018.
The money raised from the #MakeFilmEqual crowdfunding campaign will pay for the essential rights clearances, marketing and distribution required to exhibit and promote The Social Model and get the message out about the lack of equality for disabled talent in the film industry.
The campaign involves a UK cinema release and screenings at film festivals and educational facilities as well as grassroots mobilisations and calls to action around these events. The #MakeFilmEqual campaign will fuel the growing movement for more representation, recognition, funding and development of disabled talent in the film industry.
However, to achieve the #MakeFilmEqual campaign goals this is only the beginning. The more we raise, the longer our campaign can run, the deeper the work we can do, and the bigger the impact we can achieve.
