That’s the first line of our privacy policy -- and the reason that Camect was born.

We remember the days when tech companies grew by creating cloud-based services that actually need to be in the cloud. We were part of that, and collectively have about 25 years experience building popular and useful cloud-based services such as Google’s flagship search engine.

Nowadays, unfortunately, the cloud often does not make services much better. You, the consumer, are often the real cloud product, and your service is paid for by a loss of control over your data. You may have no practical alternative, but at least it’s free and convenient.

Over lunch one day in 2016, our founders, Chao Liu and Arup Mukherjee, observed that cloud-based cameras offer even less. In exchange for ease of use and analysis of your video, you give up your privacy, get locked into an ecosystem of limited camera choices, risk owning a paperweight if your cloud service is discontinued, and get charged an arm and a leg for the privilege.

As camera enthusiasts and computer scientists, Arup and Chao knew that everything offered by the cloud camera giants could be done locally, and decided to build themselves the system they would have liked to buy. That system managed data locally but preserved cloud-like convenience, and a lot of work went into making sure it produced alerts that were actually usable. It turned out to be the system that several friends wanted too, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Three years and many improvements later, we have decided to share Camect with the world. We believe it’s smarter than the alternatives, just as convenient, maintains your ownership of your data, and happens to cost much less. It also learns from your feedback, and gets smarter for everyone -- without compromising privacy -- the more feedback it gets.
