Brooklyn Free School is a not-for-profit school dedicated to the democratic principles of Summerhill, a place where children can be themselves and learn by following their own path. You can learn more about BFS here at www.brooklynfreeschool.org.

Brooklyn Free School purchased a building 4 years ago, in the historic Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn, and we are working very hard to improve inside and out on a shoestring budget.  This year, we would like to redo the front yard.  We would like to be better neighbors by relocating a forsythia hedge to the sides, build raised planters to grow vegetables, and have built-in seating to help foster a community space for staff, parents, and students.

Having a new front yard will give BFS a much friendlier face to the street, but that's not all...

  • The school will have vegetables to use in our lunch program;

  • The raised beds will be used for school and after-school projects, to learn about growing food, science, and patience;

  • Having built-in seating will foster conversations and community-building.

Most of the work will be done by volunteers, and the plants, bulbs and seeds are donated, but we need to purchase a few things:

  • 4x4 lumber to build sturdy raised beds and built-in benches: $730;

  • a circular metal bench: $250;

  • potting soil and mulch: $410.

We also need to pay a carpenter for three days to cut and assemble the beds and benches ($720.)

We are honored to have Marie-Helene Attwood, from Edible Petals, donate her design skills, time, and expertise to this project. She set up this page to help BFS keep funds for tuition support rather than building improvement.  You can learn more about her work and past projects here at www.edible-petals.com.

Please donate whatever amount you can, all donations will get us closer to our goal of creating a space for learning and discovery, as well as a beautiful place for strengthening our community.

Thank you for your supporting our front yard project!
