Short Summary
Crohn's Awareness Project was started by Brad Watson-Davelaar in 2010. As a Crohn’s sufferer, Brad wanted to find a way to help those who struggle like he had for countless years. He started working on awareness for Crohn’s Disease, a condition he has suffered with for over 16 years, but quickly expanded his operation to bring awareness for all IBD sufferers. Fast forward four years and we bring you to A Night of Gut Busting Laughter presented by the Crohn’s Awareness Project! This is a dream come true for Brad.
With a bounding leap, he turned on the C.A.P. signal and his trusted band of sidekicks answered!
The Nitty Gritty
Crohn's Awareness Project is holding their fundraiser on November 2, 2014 to bring in funds to help Crohn's and Colitis Canada advance their research in finding a cure.
With your help we can give our supporters a night they won’t ever forget and offer you great rewards for helping us out. With a portion of the campaign funds we will finally be publishing our book, 'Tales from the Toilet Bowl'. Something we have been wanting to do for quite a while. Our higher tier donors will be receiving signed paperback copies of our Funnies book as a backer award along with a chance to get their name in the credits of the book!
With your contribution we can really make a difference. People with Crohn’s tend to suffer in silence and we would intend to change that. We want to educate people and improve the quality of life of those suffering from IBD.
Our Impact
Starting out as a small project to help bring education & awareness for all IBD sufferers, the Crohn's Awareness Project grew int a force for good. The Crohn's Awareness Project use their Funnies to help explain the everyday lives of an IBD sufferer. We pride ourselves in helping the community understand & deal with the everyday troubles they go through.
We don't want to stop there!
A Night of Gut Busting Laughter is a step to something much larger. We have a long term plan that includes connecting with the community more. Brad always had the dream of helping out youths & those who are first diagnosed with IBD. It's a scary world to step into but Crohn's Awareness Project wants to be there to help people understand what they are dealing so they can live a productive life.
Risks & Challenges
In addition to raising funds to operate the fundraiser, we are also looking to raise money to help publish our Funnies book. The years of hard work and creative thoughts put into this book are just waiting to be released to the public. Without donations, this book might have to lie in the dark for a while longer as people yearn for its release. The backs of toilets will remain barren while the book basket beside the toilet overflows with the dusty remains of Reader’s Digest long forgotten as the reader waits for the much anticipated arrival of their shiny new CAPS Funnies bathroom reading material!
One of the biggest challenges with a small campaign like ours is getting the word out there. With YOUR help, we can spread the word about this campaign, raise the funds we need, and raise awareness about conditions that have been locked behind kitchen pantries and bathroom doors for too long. Through your donations and sharing this campaign with your friends and families, we can also boost our ticket sales to make this the best birthday fundraiser ever!
Overcoming the Dumps:
In order to make this fundraiser as big of a success as we can, we are working together as a team to try and bring in as much local support as possible. We have a very dedicated and hardworking group of local volunteers that vary in specialities ranging from artists, scholars, media and business managers. But what matter more than any of that is our passion. This project is very close to our hearts & our determination to see this through will see us overcome any hurdles that may try to slow us down. But we know we aren’t invincible superheros and we need your help to make this possible.
The C Team!
Brad:
Brad has been a crohn’s sufferer for 16 years. He never felt comfortable with sitting on the sidelines, always involved in one project or another to try & bring awareness to Crohn’s. An idea was brought to life that would focus on the power of laughter & how it can change peoples lives. Something happened over the short time that the Crohn’s Awareness Project was starting to grow. An experience that not only helped others heal but ultimately, it ended up helping Brad of all people.
Dylan:
A cartoon and art fanatic from birth, Dylan has been working as a freelance cartoonist since high school, adding animation to his roster after graduating with a Masters in Classical Animation from the Centre for Digital Imaging and Sound. Dylan has worked in studios around Vancouver doing everything from shadows and highlights on classically animated commercials to lead character Flash animation on such shows as Chaotic and Delilah and Julius. In addition, he has written and directed several short cartoons under his own banner, Outhouse Cartoons, including a feature length Flash animated film called The Case of the Midnight Murderer. He also writes and draws the web comic, Cowman.
Byron:
Currently working on his PhD from SFU in Communication, Byron is also on the board of directors for the Soong Ching Ling Children’s Foundation of Canada. It was through his passion for sharing media literacy for health & education awareness that he came to join The Crohn’s Awareness Project.
Dave:
David is a film editor who has been working in the animation industry for 8 years. He's worked on several animated feature films and is currently working on a new CG animated series of "Bob the Builder". David had never heard of Crohn's Disease until he met Brad 14 years ago. Over these years he's watched one of his best friends go through the ups and the many downs of Crohn's. He wanted to get involved with the Crohn's Awareness Project in order to bring people's attention to Crohn's and hopefully help people living with Crohn's.
Brody:
Hailing from the great prairie nation of Alberta, Brody comes to us with the purest of intentions and the strongest of wills! Organization and getting things done is one of Brody’s strong points. They work in the derby community supplying roller skates and gear to anyone who is interested in giving it a try. In their spare time Brody loves to watch movies and play games, but has found a new love for helping the members of C.A.P. get their message out there and succeed in anything that they set their minds to.
Hollie:
Coming all the way from Australia, Hollie has lived in Canada for a short time but that didn’t stop her from jumping on board with C.A.P. Hollie is a professionally trained pastry chef with a giant spatula and a giant heart. She never hesitates to stand up for what she believes in, and in this case she believes that Crohns and Colitis need a voice too. Such a valuable member of the team.
Annie:
Majoring in Speech Language Pathology, Annie loves helping people out. When she heard that Brad needed help with his fundraiser she jumped at the opportunity to get in there and spread the word. Leaping short dog houses in a single bound, and running faster than a speeding iguana, she wows people with her linguistic skills and makes them bend to her will with her grammatical super powers!
