Wow! You funded this project in under 24 hours! Thanks to the generous support, this project will be realized with the best quality supplies that I can afford. It will now look that much better and last that much longer for the city of Spartanburg.

Any further donations that are not needed for this specific project will be placed in a fund to help realize future AiR projects. Some things in the works are: Summer Art Show, The Epic Spartanburg adventure project (more details coming soon!), AiR Exit Show, Rungish Towers project, and the Heroic (re)Production Workshop.

Unfortunately, now that the project is funded, Steve cannot guarantee any further perks. if you would really like a drawing, though, talk to Steve personally and maybe we can work something out. (Steve@hub-bub.com)

Our Story

Each year, HUB-BUB Artists-in-Residence leave something behind for the HUB-BUB permanent collection before they go. I'm Steve Snell, a current resident, and I want to leave behind something that can be shared beyond the walls of HUB-BUB to become a literal part of the vision of Spartanburg. The idea is to fill the old garage door on the south side of the HUB-BUB building, which once served as the showroom for the old Nash car dealership and currently sits derelict and vacant, with the image of a photographed palmetto tree. The intention is to add life to a part of the building and the surrounding Grain District, which has the potential to become a public arts centerpiece for the city.

The mural will be completed by March 29, 2012 and will be unveiled at the Artists-in-Residence Exit Show that day. Help us to raise the money to realize this vision!

The Impact

Public art is an important element for any city. Currently, HUB-BUB boasts and hosts the enormous graffiti wall, which draws hundreds of viewers to this area of the city each year. A block away is the Hub City Art Park, which provides installation and sculpture for public enjoyment. This mural will add to the creative climate of Spartanburg, bringing even more color and vitality to this area, which has the potential to become the public art center of the city. Help HUB-BUB draw attention to an often overlooked area of the Grain District and build this public art palmetto!

What We Need & What You Get

All donations will be used to buy paint, plywood, epoxy, brushes, tape and any other material needed to create this painting. The mural will be 11 2/3 ft. wide by 14 ft. high, containing approximately 5,796 individually painted squares of solid color. What you get is a life-size image of a palmetto tree that is formed much the way an image comes together on computer. With your help, this tree will come to life!

Other Ways You Can Help

Tell your friends why you want a palmetto mural in the Grain District and help it happen! What does public art mean to you? What does the palmetto tree mean to you? We can't make this mural happen without you. Spread the word! Share the video!
