Short Summary
Hi – I'm David Kaplowitz, a London-based filmmaker. I make lots of short form docs and promo films for the likes of Sadler's Wells, Rambert, The Royal Academy of Dance, The Royal Opera House, and many others.
This film is an independent project about a guy whose music filling the air in N16 on a Saturday morning has brought me a small, nearly weekly joy for about 3 years.
Costello is a character. Part virtuoso, part storyteller, Costello's got a twinkle in his eye that let's you know he knows he's a badass. But at the heart of it all, he's a Romanian immigrant who came to London in search of a better living, playing music as much as he can to support his family.
We walk through the streets with Costello freestyling about music, life, culture, community and the importance of immigrants in society. We sit with him and learn how his father taught him and supported him and instilled in him a sense of discipline. We learn about the intertwining of music and family and tradition and the 80 year old accordion that was his father's and will someday be passed to his grandchildren. We learn a little more about our own community through someone who has woven himself in a small and beautiful way into it.
This is a short film that I will be entering in one or more local short film festivals, and one that requires a little bit of funding to get made.
What We Need & What You Get
We need about £1600 to make this film. This is to cover costs to hire a Romanian translator and production assistant (Voichi Judele, without whom this film would not be happening!) as well as expenses for Costello and myself, plus the indiegogo fees. Any surplus funds will go to continue work on this film as a larger project.
