"Not just another Tribute Show! We're not Elvis Live! It's so much more than just a concert. It's unique"

How Can I Keep from Singing pays tribute to the music of Eva Cassidy – A North American treasure. Featuring the talented and versatile vocalist, Cayla Brooke, the show takes you on a journey from Eva Cassidy’s humble beginnings in Washington DC, to some of her most magical moments on stage and ultimately her untimely death in 1996.

“People have either heard of Eva – and are devoted fans,” commented Cayla Brooke. “Or they have yet to be! For both groups, this show is a magical experience.”

Featuring over 25 songs it’s an audible feast of musical styles ranging from jazz and blues, to gospel, country and folk. “Just none of that pop crap,” as Eva would say. Where else can you hear Songbird, Over the Rainbow, Wayfaring Stranger, Fields of Gold and Danny Boy all in setting? Cayla deftly blends these songs together seasoning them with her own brand of wit and sparkle.

Cayla is joined on stage by the charismatic and gifted vocalist Tom Pickett adding some funk and good old fashioned soul to the mix. The four piece band is led by Bill Sample on piano and featuring Rene Worst on bass, David Ivaz on guitar and Buff Allen on drums.

We are not backed by a big theatre company or corporation. Its just us. A Group of musicians and performers who believe in this project. The money donated will go towards the start up costs of putting on another run of the show in the Spring of 2014. It is during this very important run that minor changes to the script and music will be made in an effort to get the show tour ready. We are happy to announce that "How Can I Keep from Singing" has been booked for a one week run in September 2014.

By helping us, you will not only be supporting the arts, but you will help this little show that could get up and running for real. You put the power back into the production. We wholeheartedly believe in what we have here. We've given our hearts, soul, time and money and you can now help us bring our dream to fruition, by aiding us with our start up costs. Taking the pressure off financially so that we can do what we do best. Perform. We know we've got a hit on our hands, we could feel it in the premier run. There was electricity in the air.

So this is what is all about:

In reality, the show costs about $12,000 to put on. That's a lot of cash. We've only asked for $5000, but we certainly could use more and wont say no.

The money donated will go towards the start up costs of putting on another small run of the show in the Spring of 2014. It is during that very important run that we will tweak a few things, pare other things down and get the show tour ready. It will go towards things that need money before we receive a penny from any ticket sales. Things like ...

  • Booking a theatre
  • Advertising.
  • Posters and handouts and programs
  • Changes to music charts and creating new ones
  • Simple set pieces
  • Costumes and props
  • Hiring a choreographer
  • Hiring a lighting designer

What do you get out of it?

  • If you live in the Vancouver area you can get tickets to the opening night of the show. They'd make a great stocking stuffer!
  • A hand written thank you note from either of the stars of the show
  • A promotional CD of the May performance (not for public distribution)
  • An autographed photo from our premier performance in September 2013.

  • Tickets to the Invite only wine and cheese party opening night! Fancy Schmancy.
  • Your named mentioned in the program or even on the poster!
  • A T-Shirt! Really? Yes. An awesome T-Shirt!

How can your few dollars help?

Ever shop at Costco? Then you know how saying "Ooh that's such a good deal!" a few times turns into "Oh my God! How did my bill get so high?" Every dollar adds up and helps us enormously. If 100 people donate $25 that's $2,500 right there! And boy, would that go a long way to getting this show up and running. We can book a theatre with that!

FAQ

Q. If the show was so popular why do you need financial help?

A. Good question. The start up costs to putting on a new show can be high. There's all that rehearsal time, getting the music together, getting the costumes things like that. Also, just because the audience loved it doesn't mean that the seats were completely full. We were getting there, and will be there next time.

Q. Why don't you have a date for the next show?

A. Another great question. We haven't booked a theatre. We haven't booked a theatre because we don't have a down payment. Which is why we're asking for help. Theatre's are booked months in advance. After this campaign is over we will look to see what is available in the Vancouver area and book. We are hoping for a May 2014 show.

Q. How long will the next run be?

A. We're not sure. It depends on how well this campaign goes and other fundraising efforts we will do. Two or three nights more than likely.

Q. After this run then what?

A. This next run is a very important one. When we did the first show,, we were able to look at it with a critical eye and see what needed to be changed (which isn't a lot) and where things could be pared down. We are happy to announce that we will be doing a one week run of the show in September as the opening show for a theatre house's upcoming season. We want to do another run so that we can work these changes and be ready for the run in September.

Q. Why don't you just get a producer?

A. We may. But for right now we are trying to do it on our own. Everyone on board right now understands the project and its uniqueness. Our past experience showed that people with the money have power and that can bring power to change things. We want to give the production the power so that the integrity of the show remains the same.

Q. What's to say that you won't just spend the money on a vacation?

A. Nothing. Except that we wont. There has been too much blood sweat and tears that have gone in to this show. If we're anything we're persistent and determined. The money will be deposited into a separate bank account specifically to be used on the budgeted start up costs for the next run.

Other Ways You Can Help

We know not everyone has money. Ha! Believe us we know! Every dollar helps, but we're not into taking food off of tables, a Starbucks latte ... yes ... but not food. So, if you can't afford to give you can certainly help by spreading the word. Like Thornton Wilder said "Money is like manure, it's not worth a thing unless it's spread around encouraging young things to grow." So spread the word. Share us on Facebook. Tweet away. Send us out in an email. We thank you for it!
