The Story

Access is Canada's premier library technology conference. It's a rewarding opportunity for library technology enthusiasts of all stripes: four days of immersive in-depth lectures, panel discussions, poster presentations, lightning talks, a hackfest, and plenty of time for networking and social events.

But attending a conference is expensive. We know there are members of our community - friends, colleagues, students - who won't be able to afford to attend Access this year without some help.

That's why the Access Organizing Committee has created Access Diversity Scholarships. The scholarships are intended to give people from traditionally underrepresented and/or marginalized groups in technology communities the chance to participate in and develop professionally at Access.

Our Goal

We've committed to funding two scholarships of up to $1000 each to offset the cost of registration, accommodation, and travel. But with your help, we could do so much more.

We'd like to fund at least one more scholarship of up to $1000 to bring a total of three deserving individuals to Access 2015. And if we raise more than $1000? We'll create even more scholarships. With the exception of Indiegogo and Paypal fees, every penny that is raised will go towards the fund.

Questions

Q. What's up with your weird perks?

A. Access is not a profit-generating conference. Any money for real, serious perks (like t-shirts or tote bags) would be taken out of this scholarship fund. That's not something we want to do! Instead, individual conference committee members volunteered to provide the listed perks out of their own pockets - and out of the goodness of their hearts.

Q. What is the application process for the scholarships? And how do you decide who gets one?

A. Both the application guidelines and more information about the diversity scholarship program are available on our website.

Q. What if someone doesn't need their whole scholarship amount (i.e. they live in Toronto and just need registration covered)?

A. We'll redirect the remainder back to the fund, where it will go towards fulfilling another scholarship.

Q. How will you disburse the scholarships in a responsible way?

A. We don't want to create barriers for our scholarship recipients, so we'll be working with each individual to figure out the best way to disburse money. At the very least, we will be requiring receipts.

Q. Do you offer tax receipts?

A. Unfortunately, no. We're not incorporated and have not registered for charitable status so we can't offer tax receipts.

Who We Are

The Access Diversity Scholarship Committee is made up of three members of the organizing committee who are passionate about diversity in tech.

Sara Allain is the Communications Librarian at Ryerson University. Prior to her current job, she was the Special Collections Librarian at the University of Toronto Scarborough Library, where she developed a deep appreciation and fascination for technology despite having no background in the field. She is passionate about improving access to STEM resources for women, girls, and the LGBT community. She also really, really likes to embroider.

Ali Versluis is the Librarian for Engineering and Energy at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and the Librarian for Engineering Technology, Architecture, and the Skilled Trades at Durham College. Before working as a librarian, Ali was the Project Manager for The Yellow Nineties Online at Ryerson University's Centre for the Digital Humanities. As the librarian for a swath of programs that tend to be dominated by men, Ali is into anything that gets ladies into technology. She still doesn't really know how to code, but swears that one day she'll learn. Ali has however, mastered the art of high fives.

Kim Pham is the Digital Projects & Technologies Librarian at the University of Toronto Scarborough Library.  Kim thinks everyone should get a fair chance to get involved with technology if they want to be.  Yea, she'd like that.  She can't embroider and is a little awkward about giving high fives, so she gets her kicks from playing around with APIs and data.
