Adam Crapser's Story
Adam Crapser was adopted from a Korean orphanage at age three by U.S. citizen parents who later abandoned him to the State of Oregon when he was nine. Adopted again, Adam was subjected to significant physical and emotional abuse by his new parents, the Crapsers. They beat, burned, and choked Adam and eventually evicted him from their home at age 17. In 1992, the Crapsers were convicted on criminal charges for the sexual assault and abuse of many of the adopted and foster children in their care.
As a teenager of 19, Adam broke into his adoptive parents’ home in an attempt to retrieve his Korean Bible and a pair of rubber shoes - the sole belongings that had come with him from the Korean orphanage as a young child - and was convicted of burglary. Adam served 2 years in prison for this conviction.
Neither of Adam’s adoptive parents had submitted the paperwork required to naturalize him as a U.S. citizen. Because of the burglary conviction and the fact that he was never naturalized as a U.S. citizen, Adam, now 40 and a father, faces deportation and separation from his home and his children.
Adam is a survivor of violence who has served his time and wants to seek treatment and be accountable for his actions. It would be incredibly difficult for him to survive in Korea as he does not have known family members, speak the Korean language or know the culture. He desperately wishes to raise his family in and contribute to the only country he has ever known.
