Over 2,500 Yale alumni have signed an open
letter to the Yale President and Yale Corporation calling for diversity
in naming the two new residential colleges. The letter calls for the University to name the two new colleges after alumni of color, alumnae, LGBT alumni, and other alumni not currently reflected in the namesakes of our residential colleges. The letter has been drawing lots of attention within the Yale community, largely through social media. Ultimately, the Yale Daily News declined to publish the letter itself, due to the massive attention the letter has already received. Instead, YDN published an article about alumni's incredible showing of support for the effort (http://bit.ly/10Wu0SD).
Help us keep the momentum going! We want to publish a full-page advertisement in the Yale Daily News that would list all of the alumni signatories who support diversity in naming Yale's new colleges. We are also working with web designers who will develop a website showcasing all of the wonderful alumni that deserve a college named after them, such as Edward Bouchet 1874 GRD 1876, Grace Hopper GRD ’34, Yung Wing 1854, Henry Roe Cloud '10, and Pauli Murray JSD '65. We hope to include a link to the website in the advertisement.
With over 2,500 signatories, it won't take much from each of us to make this happen. (If we each gave $1, we would have enough to publish two full-page advertisements.) Any money collected above our campaign goal will go toward promoting this cause among Yale alumni, faculty, students, and administration. Please donate whatever you can today!
