Greetings all,

I am Kai Morgan, a clinical psychologist in Jamaica. I studied in the USA and returned to my homeland in 2001 with one of my goals as the enhancement of psychology and psychological services in the region. I have always been passionate about the topic of sex and relationships as I see both as the very core and fabric of our society. Without these elements, there would be no procreation and advancement of our species, yet sex is still a taboo subject in many areas and Jamaica and the Caribbean is one of them. There is very little research in the Caribbean regarding sex and relationships and what we do understand often comes from a Eurocentric perspective as this is mainly what we have. We each have our own perceptions, but that is just what they are, individual perceptions. I want to change that. I want the general reality. I want us to have research that is representative of our people's behaviours and thoughts. I want us to move away from using other ideals of what relationships and sex should be like and define this for ourselves. I want us to use this research to be able to guide couples, families and our society more practically so that we can understand ourselves better with all our complexities and minimize the sometimes painful antecedents of sex and relationships (e.g. HIV, unwanted pregnancies, STIs). I want the truth.

In order to achieve this, I will need approximately USD25,000 in order to conduct this research in 3 Caribbean islands. The bulk of these funds will go towards hiring 3 research assistants (in the 3 Caribbean islands I will target) to help with data collection, analysis and write-up over a 6 month period (USD17,100); to purchase data collection software (Survey Monkey) and a qualitative analytic software programme (Atlas Ti) (USD1,700); to facilitate travel expenses to the Caribbean islands (USD1,700), journal publications and a book that will ensue from this work (USD2,000); to purchase 3 digital recording devices for each island being surveyed (USD200);  and finally a miscellaneous amount to cover any additional expenses that may arise (USD2,000).

Many attractive perks are awaiting those who fund this venture. From being mentioned in the book as a contributor, to receiving a 50% discount on the cost of the book, to receiving a signed copy of the book.

If I don't reach this goal, the funds will still be utilized to do whatever research can be facilitated. The project will be scaled down accordingly so that something can be produced, as this is a project that MUST be done.

I believe that this project will provide invaluable information about sex and relationships in the Caribbean, an area where a dearth exists and yet there are so many problems here. Just yesterday my 8 year old, 6 year old and I witnessed a physical fight between a man and a woman in public on the road. I see and work with this everyday in my practice as a clinical psychologist and it is these core relationships that we need to understand and help people to improve of which sex is usually a major trigger and "deal breaker". I have conducted many research projects in the past (google me and you will be able to see my track record here in my home country of Jamaica), been an editor and contributor to a book on Caribbean psychological issues but now, I'm taking it a step further into an area of greater specificity and greater need.

I know some of you won't be able to contribute much or anything at all. If this is the case, I ask kindly that you spread the word, spread the message and help me to build the information highway on psychology in the Caribbean based on empirical research.

GIVE THANKS!!
