Through the Looking Glass and into the Heart of the Community.

What is Storm Fever Theatre and what are its aims?

We are Storm Fever, a theatre company that is for everyday people who haven't acted before or haven't had their voices heard. We specialise in helping people with underlying mental health issues and/or people who have never had the opportunity to perform. This project has been set up to help people express themselves and get out of their heads and everyday lives. They use art as a safe place to explore characters and scenarios they never would have done before and learn from it. We also feel in our cast that age is but a number and doesn't define you as a person. We have cast members ranging from 22-85 which means that as a theatre community we can conquer any age barriers that have been set in modern day society.

So what is the play and what's the main aims of this production?

Play is on he 22nd of February at 6pm. Doors open 5.45pm. East Oxford Community Centre.

Wonderland is a place where anything is possible and we have decided to call our project after Alice and this well known children's fairy tale.  However, this production will have a environmental twist and therefore will simply be called 'Alice with a Twist.' In this tale, it starts at Alice's birthday party and then goes into a whirlwind adventure after being swept up by the rubbish tip outside her house. She is sad, confused and looking for her cat, but will she find a way out of this trash wonderland she finds herself in?

Aimed at both adults and children, this play presents this classic fairy tale from a different perspective, and highlights the ongoing environmental crisis that we are finding ourselves in everyday. From the forest fires in Australia to our fish eating plastic, Storm Fever wanted to write a play that talks about these issues but in a way that is also child friendly. This is so that the younger generation can understand the importance of these issues too.

Why Help Us?

By helping fund this project you will be helping a brand new theatre company root itself into the arts and spread its wings into highlighting issues and events that need to be spoken about. As well as this, you will be helping a community of people gain confidence and improve their mental health by exploring the arts. This particular project is getting people to discover their inner child and helping them relive and express themselves in a very human way. The actors have worked very hard to get this far and by giving us this extra support, we can put on the best show we can for local communities and support groups . This show is all about freedom of expression, identity and the environment  and so by contributing you are letting everyday people have their opinions heard.

What will you receive by donating to this company?

  • Any money raised will go straight back into covering costs for the rehearsal space, performance venue, making and buying costumes, props and set design. It will also give us the opportunity to keep our ticket prices low and to have concessions on the door.
  • If we cover our initial costs, any profit will go straight back into the theatre company for our next show and future projects. It will also fund for any community workshops we want to do in the future.
  • By supporting this company you will be giving back to your local community and will receive an email of thanks and appreciation from the Artistic Director. As well as this you will receive the perks which are listed on this campaign.

The storms that lay ahead...

There has been various risks and challenges with this project. From the fact that most of the people in it have had no previous performance experience, to the idea that this whole project is community lead which has its own series of risks and hurdles. We have no money up front, which means we are relying on this page and a series of clothes sales and busking performances. The more we can raise, the better the quality of the performance.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you can spread the word about our show, to liking our Facebook page or Instagram Storm Fever Theatre to sharing this Indiegogo page, it would make the world of difference to us! Performance Dates will be confirmed but we are scheduling the show for the mid/end of February, which doesn't give us too long! However, we are determined to do everything we can! What we can promise is a colorful, avant-garde, political and fantastical experience.  We are also planning to book acting workshops after the show and try to get to the heart of Oxford in everything we do. Any wonderland props or costumes you have hiding in your attic  we could use as well would be great, we want to recycle as much as possible! Or just wear silly hats and come and see us perform! We can't wait to do a storm of a show!
