All Too Human: What's it about?

(pictured: Jeffrey Arrington; photo by Patrick Kwan)

After struggling with years of severe depression, Mark has decided that today is the day to end his misery. There is no moral or spiritual philosophy that can bring about Mark’s salvation and convince him that suicide is not the most pragmatic choice to make. Driven by this hard, cold logic he decides to cut himself off from those around him and tries to take his life, but no matter how he tries to accomplish his task, life gets in the way. Throughout his journey, many would-be saviors attempt to convince him that life does in fact have meaning and is worth living. Can any of them get through to Mark and change his mind?

Background on All Too Human:

Who am I?

I'm Travis D. Brown, a Portland-based filmmaker. After several years of writing, filming, editing and producing short films by myself and others, I have now completed the script for my first, and most personal, feature film.

What makes life worth living? Do meaning and value actually exist and if they do, who determines their definitions? Does belief in an afterlife, a god, or a spiritual system really provide solutions to our most desperate questions?

These are all concepts I set out to explore in All Too Human. These are important questions that nearly everyone asks at some point in their lives. The typical answers to these questions that religion offers don't suffice for those of us who don't value faith or are skeptical of the claims religion makes. So what's the alternative?

It is here that All Too Human finds its purpose: to direct the audience’s attention toward reality, to encourage a confrontation with life and to examine our perceptions of life's value without relying on faith or hope for something that may never come; to be at ease with living for ourselves, because we want to live, not because we have to.

The Budget: This is where you come in!

The above breakdown of the budget are estimates of what we'll need for the film shoots themselves and also include the cost of post-production.

  • Cast/Crew: One of our main goals for this project is to pay as many people as much as we can -- to create our vision while also providing jobs at the highest day rates we can manage.
  • Gear: Not only do we need further lighting gear, but we also need to rent a van to haul everything around in. Cameras are already covered, which saves us a huge portion of our budget.
  • Post-Production: We'll also be saving a lot of money in post-production because I, Travis, will be doing the editing myself, but we will need hard drives. Many hard drives!
  • Art Department: This includes props and physical effects. We want the film to look as great as possible with minimal computer-generated graphics.
  • Food/Beverage: We want to provide the most enjoyable working environment possible, which means providing food and beverage on site for the actors/crew during shoots. I will personally provide much of the finances needed for this aspect, though I could use some supplementary money from this campaign.
  • Permits/Insurance: This is needed to pay the city the cost of shutting down a street or two; At least one scene involves a car crash and another includes a busy street - no crosswalk necessary...!
I have been saving my personal funds for this project -- my bank account is committed to making it happen, although it would only cover a small portion of the budget as it currently stands.
And as we've been doing our research into crowdfunding for film, we noticed that most filmmakers create two campaigns for their projects - one for pre-production and filming and one for post-production. We wanted to attempt to consolidate campaigns and raise money for the whole project in one go. That way, you know that the film won't get caught up in post without ever being released.
Your dime is going towards making this thing go all the way
