What is the Alpine Exposures Photo Book?
The Alpine Exposures Photo book is a coffee table book that will showcase Jon Griffith's work over the last ten years in the mountain sports industry. True to Jon's work ethic the book only shows photos taken in real situations in order to offer readers an in-depth experience of the world of extreme mountain sports. Featuring shots from around the European Alps from the Eiger North Face to Mont Blanc, there are detailed captions accompanying every shot- there is a real focus here on inspirational photography not just eye candy.
Scattered throughout the book are longer photo essays that showcase certain big or classic climbs and that we feel deserve more than just one photo to describe the climb. In a way the book is a photographic guide to what we feel are the Alps's most beautiful climbs, ski descents, and flying terrains, and will hopefully inspire the reader to add a few more climbs/descents to their tick list.
Excerpt from the Foreword by Ueli Steck:
The one thing that will always be hard for
me to accept is when we pack our bags and Jon puts in his heavy camera – I’m
quite a stickler when it comes to keeping weight to a minimum, and my consolation
for that now is in this book. Life in the present moment is what counts.
Experiences and encounters are what we keep and what shapes us. Jon’s
photography conveys these experiences. He captures the authenticity and spirit
of these moments in time and I’m glad that he at least is keeping a record of
them.

The Man Behind the Camera
![]()
Based in Chamonix, France, Jonathan has climbed the world over and established himself as one of the world’s leading mountain sports photographers. A highly accomplished Alpinist himself, Jonathan continues to push himself to shoot what has never been shot before. This approach has taken his climbing to a level that sees him regularly tie in with climbers such as Ueli Steck and embarking on cutting edge ascents to visually document expeditions in the Alps, Patagonia, Alaska and the Himalayas. It’s a method that puts authentic climbing at its heart: an increasingly rare but refreshing approach to adventure photography in a climate where style is valued more than substance.
What can you expect to see in the Alpine Exposures Photo Book?
The book will cover the European Alps with a main focus on the Mont Blanc Massif. Whilst Jon is predominantly an Alpine Climbing Photographer there are also large parts devoted to other sports he has shot such as skiing, BASE, rock climbing, ice climbing, paragliding, and speed riding. The book aims to cover all the great classic Alpine Climbs from the Eiger North Face to more mellow classic ridge climbs like the Rochefort arete. In a sense there will be something in there for everyone, whether you are operating at the top end of your sport or are just starting out.
Layout and Content
The text will be printed in English, French and German within the same edition
As already mentioned the content is real-life driven. There are no setup or faked shots in this book: I wanted to keep true to the values of
Alpinism and to the people that I’ve climbed with. To that end all the images
contained are real- these aren’t posed shots but honest moments captured that
show a fleeting glimpse of a greater climb. The extended captions are there to
help set the scene because sometimes it’s easy to forget that behind a split
second snap shot in time there may have been days of hard climbing just for
that single moment through the lens, and for me that’s important.
Classic, popular, or major climbs are highlighted in longer photo essays to help add variation to the book. The idea is to tell the stories of hard climbs, the people behind them, and the work behind ground breaking ascents in a visual and caption driven manner. It's not just a set of mind numbing images but ones that have real context and story behind them and that is what we hope will keep the reader delving in to this book for hours at a time.
