Where Am I Going?:
This March, for alternative Spring break, I will be heading down to Arizona to volunteer with No Mas Muertes: No More Deaths. No More Deaths provides humanitarian aid in the Arizona desert to end migrants deaths.
The Impact!
I will be spending a week in the Sonora Desert and several days in Tucson learning about border history, providing aid and getting a better understanding of the challenges faced in this boarder state. Last year 252 bodies of men women and children were found in the desert. Currently, our militarized boarders violate International human rights norms. Working with No More Deaths, I will be helping to prevent deaths.
Immigration is certainly a hot-button issue. Coming from a non-border state, a lot of us don't really understand the history of the boarder, or of immigration policy. I would like to get some first hand experience of the facts and hopefully raise your interest in the issue.
Most of all, I'd like to spread the word to you all about No More Deaths and donate some of my time to help prevent deaths; who would argue with that?
What is Needed:
As most of you know, I am finishing up my masters in social work at the fabulous State University. Salem State is a public institution and, while I absolutely love it, they cannot offer any financial assistance for alternative spring break. My fund raising amount of $600 will cover part of my plane fare and part of the $200 cost to be housed and fed by No More Deaths. It will be used for nothing else. In the event I raise more than my goal, I will not accept anymore contributions after $750. My cost of the trip including plane fare, $200 to stay with NMD and cab fares will total about $750.
I cannot express how appreciative I am of any amount I am able to fund raise. Parting with money in this economic climate is never easy, especially when it's something that is difficult to understand.
No More Deaths works hard to prevent the deaths of hundreds of men, women and children who lose their lives to starvation and dehydration each year and I am so thankful for the opportunity to go.
