Hello
I am Santiago Zapata, the developer of Ananias, a classic Roguelike
game designed to be played comfortably in touch screen devices such as
smartphones and tablets, as well as easily accessible through any
modern browser.
You can play the current demo of the game online here, or download it for
your Android
device. It's free!
We are a four persons team working to create an awesome classic roguelike experience on modern devices. Using funds from you, the community, we were able to create this demo, but to finish the game we need your help.
We want to provide a genuine roguelike experience; not a roguelite, but a game that stays close to the foundations of the roguelike genre, except the accessibility barrier that prevents so many people from enjoying them
So far we have been able to deploy our demo to Google Play Store, where it's been installed by about 24.000 users; we want to finish its development, delivering a complete product.
What does this game play like?
Gameplay is designed to be simple and fun; your goal is to
survive about 25 levels, and fetch an ancient artifact located at the
end.
At the beginning of the game you can pick a monster pet to join you in your adventure, each one of them has different abilities and can evolve into powerful creatures using magic spells found into the dungeon.
There are 4 classes, each one with its own strengths and weaknesses:
Alchemist
Shoots liquid at enemies (Acid, Liquid Fire, and other potions)
Can mix reagents into potions without danger of explosion.
Starts with powerful potions (Flame Potion for example which
deals a lot of fire damage when thrown)
Arcane
Can cast the most powerful spells without danger of backfiring
Extends power of magic wands
Starts with powerful spells (like Charm Monster which makes any
creature become your ally)
Paladin
Can use all weapons and armor
Blocks attacks using his shield
Extends lifetime of weapons
Hunter
Never misses a shot with a bow
Performs critical damage with bows
Prevents arrows from breaking
The Dungeon
The levels in the dungeon are randomly generated every time you
play, so you have to explore the level gathering useful equipment and
looking the stairs to the next level, while avoiding death and managing
your limited resources.
- ...will you drop your spare weapon and carry this potion with
you, knowing it could be useful on the next level?
- ...will you risk attacking a group of enemies to fetch that
powerful armor that could save your life? or will you better run away
to save your hitpoints
- ...will you withstand the enemy attacks to reach the backrow
and kill the phantom who is constantly healing all others?
- ...will you carry with you that powerful weapon to use it
against strong enemies two levels below, even if that means using up
inventory space and attacking with a weaker weapon?
The odds are against you, but if you die there's always a chance
to start again and wish for better fortune
What makes this game different from other roguelikes?
Ananias is designed from the ground up with the idea of a
straightforward user experience for a touch screen device; interactions
are optimized so you don't have to waste time with cumbersome movement,
while still allowing you to explore the dungeon and fight the dwellers
of the dungeon.
A simple gameplay is also a strong design focus; the game is
designed for you to be able to do quick playthroughs, trying to delve
deeper into the dungeon every time.
There are 41 enemy types, each with an unique feature that makes
him stand apart from the rest. We are favoring uniqueness versus
quantity in the monster design. Let me show you some of them!

Satyr: This mystical race inhabits the temple
ruins, they move quickly so keep an eye on them! |
![]() |
Necromancer: These sorcerors meddle with the
realms of the dead, they can summon undead servant to do their
command |
![]() |
Fencer: Masters of the swords, they are able to
easily disarm their enemies leaving them at their mercy |
![]() |
Demonspawn:This dark demonical race is able to warp
next to their enemy giving them no chance to escape their doom |
The game is being developed using the phaser.io library, one of
quickest growing frameworks for HTML5 mobile development; it has great
integration with CocoonJS, which in turn is capable of generating
native packages for a lot of platforms.
What we need and what we'll do
Back on September 2014 we ran a campaign which allowed us to produce the current demo of the game. But we need
your support to finish the product and take it to the public.
We are looking forward for 1.000 USD to use them on the
following:
Completing the Sprite Pack
We are going to to enhance the appearance of the levels by changing the way they are rendered and adding
furniture and features into the levels, we also need new graphics for the items and monsters!
We are also adding animations for the different spells we have added.
Getting art for the manual
In order to create the game manual as well as helping publish the game in the different distribution
channels, we need to create some art, here's a sample of the kind of art we are going to need.
Completing the Soundtrack
Right now we have only one in-game track; we need to add 5
new tracks to increase immersion into the game. Here's
a sample of the current track
Having a complete high quality SFX pack
We are currently using a handful of hand picked sound effects from
opengameart; they are nice, but in order to provide a more immersing
experience we are looking forward to have a custom made sound effects
pack including attack sounds for each enemy and magic spell, as well as
for the different weapons and environmental sounds sound effects
