We are private citizens helping to raise funds for the Ankara Refugee Centre. The Centre provides emergency help, legal assistance, and education to refugees in and around Ankara, Turkey.
The Ankara Refugee Centre...
accompanies and serves refugees and defends their rights,
without consideration of race, language, culture, or religion
by raising awareness of their problems
and organizing social and education activities
with help of refugees themselves, many volunteers,
and generous donors.
It works in collaboration with KADER/JRS, UNHCR, and other local NGOs.
I started teaching English to refugees a few months ago and through this activity I've met several refugees and learned more about the general situation of refugees in Turkey.
With the influx of war refugees from Syria, resources to help have become scarce. Turkey has seen a 500% increase in refugees over the last three years. Many of the refugees at the Ankara Centre are Iraqis and Iranians who had started new lives in Syria but were forced to flee after the fighting broke out.
How the Ankara Refugee Centre Helps
-
Emergency Help
- provides food coupons
- provides secondhand clothing, blankets, baby items, housewares
- emergency medical support
- legal information and a referral system
-
Education
- Turkish classes to ease integration and children's schooling
- English lessons to assist resettlement into a third country
- Social support, such as sports teams and art classes
I'm attempting to raise funds to boost the emergency fund for the Centre, which will help refugees with unforeseen needs.
The Impact
The Syrian Crisis is consuming most resources in Turkey allocated for refugees. Ankara Refugee Centre is at risk of closing due to lack of funds. It serves forgotten vulnerable refugees coming mainly from Iraq and Iran.
