Short Summary
Help us build and bring the banana stand to Apogaea.
- I am a 5 year burner who loves art, community, and volunteering! I want to gift a fun and tasty treat to Apogaea and the Denver community. I'm working with Dan Singer and John Perez, who also love bananas and the community!
- Contributors will help us buy materials to build and decorate the stand, and purchase bananas, chocolate, and dry ice to gift to patrons. The banana stand will never charge for a banana!

- If we don't reach our goal, the funds will mainly go toward the materials to build the structure and funds for the bananas will come out of our pockets.
The Impact
Apogaea’s Original Banana stand will engage all members of the community by handing out frozen, chocolate-covered, bananas to the population of Apo. This will engage participants by providing them with a place to come hang out and eat some delicious bananas, and enjoy other banana flavored accoutrement.
The idea is interactive because volunteers will work and promote the stand by wearing Banana costumes, hand out bananas, and other goodies, and there will be daily activities visitors can participate in like hula hooping.
This idea has already created some excitement on its Facebook page (Apogaea Banana Stand [The Big Yellow Joint]) which currently has 146 members. More excitement will be created before and during the event by wearing banana costumes to events to advertise the project at Apo.
The biggest challenge to completing this project will be organizing a construction schedule and sticking to it. We will work to overcome this challenge by having a skilled craftsman (John Perez) use a multitude of tools to build it. Also, we are still figuring out the best way to keep the bananas frozen on site. We are leaning towards dry ice which would be the easiest. We plan on making all bananas before the event and keeping them frozen until the event. Then we will transfer them to coolers right before the event. By making the bananas before the event, we will cut down on a massive amount of hassle and trash onsite. This idea will inspire people to meet new friends, provide a gathering space, and allow participants to engage in conversation. Ideally it would be centrally located and allow people to “meet up at the big yellow joint” and “fuel up” before they begin their travels.
The project is extremely safe. It is a secured, standing, kiosk that will not allow for climbing, and will not have any fire elements. There will not be any unsafe features such as glass, plastic, or sharp edges. In regards to the food aspect, bananas will not go bad to the point that eating a thawed banana will harm anyone. If the bananas were to thaw a little during the event, they will not make anyone sick if they were to eat one. There is NO TOUCHING and will be humorous signs to this effect.
The project will be properly lit at night with very bright, multi colored, LED lights tracing the front opening and sign, as well as solar lights marking all rebar, tie downs, and the perimeter of the structure.
There will be no hazards to the environment because all paint and materials will be sealed in case of rain, and secured to prevent loss during wind. There may be health hazards if someone is allergic to bananas or chocolate but we will post all food ingredients to prevent allergic reactions. We're leaving the corn-baller at home so no one will be burned.
The structure will be made of plywood, metal hinges/screws/nails, and non-toxic, outdoor paint. The project will prevent injury with safety signs (memes), proper lighting, and marking of perimeter at night.
Risks & Challenges
Completing the stand in time for the event will be a challenge due to the small number of people working on the project but we will rise to that challenge.
