How many Georgians do you think don’t have access to healthy foods?

In 2014, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that over two million people throughout the state have limited access to stores that sell healthy foods - and more than 500,000 of those are children. That same report, Hunger in America 2014, and findings from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution identified 35 food deserts inside the Atlanta perimeter.

What is a food desert?

The USDA defines a food desert as a community with low or no access to fresh and/or healthy foods, in which at least 500 people and/or 33 percent of the population live more than a mile from a supermarket or large grocery store.

How do we eliminate food deserts in Atlanta?

One neighborhood at a time.  The Atlanta-based "ArkFab" project is a collaboration between Truly Living Well and Georgia Tech to develop innovative systems that can be used on urban farms throughout the region.  On its new Collegetown farm site in Atlanta’s West End, Truly Living Well is laying groundwork to ensure that neighbors have plenty of fresh food within walking distance.

The work doesn’t stop at just growing the food. The City of Atlanta, Georgia Tech, and M. Agnes Jones Elementary School have all partnered with the Truly Living Well Collegetown farm to help create a truly unique space for local residents to learn and form healthier eating habits for years to come.  Participating school children and events will ensure that Atlanta's youth learn about the value of nutrition and pass this information along to their families and future generations.

How is ArkFab doing this?

The ArkFab collaboration brings together agricultural, academic and community resources to enhance the sustainability of urban farms. Since 2006, Truly Living Well has been working to build the infrastructure for a local food economy. Urban agriculture in Atlanta is growing by leaps and bounds, with new entrepreneurs entering the field each year.  In late 2015, the City of Atlanta responded to this emerging business sector by hiring its first-ever Director of Urban Agriculture.  Through this initiative, the city works to convert unused spaces, including “brownfields,” into urban gardens.  ArkFab’s aquaponics  hoophouse is a natural technology that help to ensure that these spaces are sustainable. Natural urban agriculture can truly transform the health and beauty of Atlanta’s urban landscape.

Who can help?
YOU can. Your donations to the ArkFab project are vital to helping Truly Living Well build and maintain its urban agriculture site, while supporting healthier lives and a safer, more beautiful neighborhood for Collegetown and other nearby residents.

Through your donations and its partners’ support, ArkFab can help the people of Collegetown build food security, economic growth, and improved health for themselves and the environment. We’ve only just begun.

Help us bring fresh, wholesome food close to every home in Atlanta by contributing today!
