Artificial Coral Reef Expansion
In 2009, Eco Koh Tao created a new artificial dive site from trash that was intended for landfill. Instead of metal and other substances ending up dumped, burnt or buried, we decided to recycle it, make it ocean friendly, and create structures for coral transplants and fish aggregation.
8 years later we have a dive site called "Junkyard" that sees an incredible amount of divers enjoying the marine life and the coral nurseries that we have developed and maintained since its inception.
However, since the dive site has become so popular, we need to begin expansion, by creating new coral transplant structures.
These structures will serve many uses. They will be used as part of our research of coral growth, attracting marine life to them for protection, and also provide an entertaining and educational experience for scuba divers. They will also help take pressure from divers on the natural reef enabling it to grow easier with less diver impacts.
With nearly 10 years of coral restoration and rehabilitation we now need to make new structures for transplanting coral in the fight against climate change and coral bleaching.
We aim to expand the dive site to cover a larger area which will see a larger growth in fish numbers and create more research opportunities.
Every little helps, so even if its just 5$, it will help go towards the cost of building the expansion.
In addition, for the first 4 weeks of the campaign, we will have a random draw for donators each week to win a free prize pack donated by PADI, which includes:
• Drawstring Bag
• Cap
• Water Bottle
• Lanyard
• Sticker
