Welcome!
I’m Adanna, the writer of ‘At The Feet Of Jesus’. ATFOJ is set in Brazil during the 2014 World Cup and explores family, football and the sacrifices made to protect your heritage at all cost. This is all brought to life through the oral storytelling of the Brazilian Candomblé tradition.
We’re raising £3000 to help bring this play to the Omnibus theatre and Young Vic this summer.
By supporting you will:
- Ensure we’re able to pay all contributors involved.
- Support our mentor programme: subsidising two young creatives to join our team & learn about the process of producing a show.
- Help us connect with local communities in London via our community performance and workshop at the Young Vic (part of their Neighbourhood Theatre initiative).
The Show's Origins
During the lead up to the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics I began to watch lots of documentaries about the effect these global events were having on the local residents of Brazil. I was captured by how similar and relatable their stories were to Londoners who were also feeling the effects of gentrification and the impact social class has on communities across the city.
In 2014 a shorter version of my play was chosen as part of the Braziliance Festival by StoneCrabs theatre. In 2016 I developed the play and submitted it to Angelic Tales new writing festival at Theatre Royal Stratford East. It was staged for one night and had a sold out performance. Since then I’ve been working towards transforming the play into a full length production.
The Show
"...the very clay you walk on runs through our veins..."
Rio 2014, the World Cup. Brazil vs Germany. The streets are electric with excitement, politics, protests and violence. The Cardoso family are at a crossroads. Hours away from being evicted, they have decide whether to fight to stay where their ancestors have lived for centuries or leave everything they know and love behind.
In their plight for freedom the family discover buried secrets that threaten to pull apart the very thing they treasure most: each other.
How far would you go to protect your family’s legacy?
At The Feet Of Jesus is a vibrant and provocative play about family, football and the sacrifices made to protect the ones you love at all costs. All brought to life, through the vibrant oral storytelling of the Brazilian Candomblé tradition.
What We Need & What You Get
Much of the costs for the production has been catered for but we still need to raise additional funds to ensure the show's success. We need the help of contributors like you to make this show happen.
The money raised during this campaign will help to cover the cost of:
- Lighting and Technical Support
- Videography (to capture rehearsals and the production)
- Costume
- Set Design
- Mentoring Programme
- Marketing
To express our gratitude for your support, all contributors will receive a Special Thanks in our program. Some support levels come with added bonuses, including:
- Press night tickets
- Signed copy of the script
- Exclusive access to rehearsals
- VIP ticket to Young Vic performance (entry via invitation only)
The Impact
I think it’s really important to explore how we all share the same hopes and fears regardless of country and culture. I wrote ATFOJ with the intention of connecting a British audience with a different perspective of Brazil that’s rarely shown on stage. My hope is that by showing this play, an audience can have fun and enjoy the relatability of the story.
We’re staging a free performance at the Young Vic and collaborating with the theatre as part of their Neighbourhood Theatre initiative. This will provide the opportunity for local communities in London (who don’t often have access to theatre) to watch our show for free. Followed by a fun Q&A and workshop with a Paraiso School of Samba.
With your support we can create a successful run and the Omnibus and Young Vic which will stand us in good stead to fulfill our future goals for the production: A UK tour of the production and and staging of the play in Brazil itself. Exciting!
Risks & Challenges
Time is the biggest challenging factor as we only have 2 months to bring this project all together by May 2020.
When managing similar projects in the past, I learnt that organisation is the essential to key to succeeding within a tight schedule. We have a dedicated team behind ATFOJ which will maximise the our time by being able to delegate tasks and share responsibilities. This will ensure the best possibility of a successful production.
