Atara - A Sci-fi Opera
My name is Amir Fattal, and I am an Israeli artist living in Berlin. For the past two years I have been working on a video installation called ‘Atara’. Atara is a 1970s styled sci-fi film set to contemporary Opera music. The score is based on the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner together with original music by Boris Bojadzhiev.
Shot on location in Berlin, it tell the story of two buildings that used to stand at the same place: the Berliner Stadtschloss and the Palast der Republik.
The video follows a ceremony that takes place in the palace during a moment when one building is being resurrected and another building is transcending into a ghost. It deals with the collective memory of architecture and its symbolic representation in public.
The music is based on the Liebestod song from the opera Tristan and Isolde, sung by Isolde after Tristan’s death. The score was made by copying the last note as the first note and proceeding in this way until a new ‘mirrored’ piece was formed and recording it live. Then this recording is reversed backwards digitally.
I have been working on this project for the past 2 years, from recording the original music, to filming the different aspects of the film. I am about to start the post-production and CGI to bring the project to life. Finishing this video will mark the end of a long process. The finished piece will be shown as a complete installation in a museum show in Berlin.
In order to finish the piece, I would greatly appreciate your support. To finance the final stages of the project, I am selling original artwork. The money will be used to pay the many talented people who have worked on this project!
To learn more about the project and the limited edition artwork, please take a look at the perks list. Thank you!

"German Interior and Japanese Interior are extensions of 1943 - German Village, showing the inside of buildings used for military experiments.
Skilled decorators from Hollywood’s RKO Studios created the interiors to ascertain how fire would spread. Craftsmen trained in Germany built the heavy furniture typical of workers’ homes in Berlin, original German cloths provided information about how home textiles burnt, and wood was regularly doused to reflect the more humid German climate.
The archived images are silk-screened, mirrored and overlapped, with black desert sand on aluminium, and turned upside down to create an enhanced perspective folded into itself. "

"Coverage, more than a play on words, is the title of the large fabric work with which this exhibition concludes. Decorative, geometric arabesques uniformly cover thirty-six differently coloured pieces of fabric, roughly the size of a scarf, a flag or a towel; over each of them the enlarged logo of the Qatar-based Al Jazeera Media Network is silkscreened. Shown together they create the impression of a screen of almost impenetrable tracery, or a curtain, a barrier. " Text by DAVID ELLIOTT

1945 (The Picture of Dorian Gray) deals with colour versus black and white, and the relationship between painting and morality. The image is taken from Hollywood’s 1945 adaptation of Wilde’s story with its themes of moral corruption, artistic expression and lust. The black and white film has only two colour shots: the first and second portraits of Dorian Gray.

Title: Marleni, 2013
Size: 50x40cm (unframed)
Edition of 5
Marleni is the superimposition of portraits of two women: Marlene Dietrich and Leni Riefenstahl. Both German cultural figures, they began their careers in Berlin in the 1920s as part of the same art milieu. Marlene Dietrich left Berlin in 1930 for Hollywood; Leni Riefenstahl became the acclaimed director of national-socialist films. During WWII Marlene Dietrich was entertaining the US troops who fought against Hitler’s Germany. These women had parallel careers: one working for the Nazi regime, the other actively opposing it from abroad. In current German culture they have come to symbolise the ‘good German’ and the ‘bad German’, raising questions about the connection between moral and artistic choices.

Silkscreen print and Lacquer on Aluminum

1943 - German Village is named after a military experiment that took place in the US that year. The work combines two facets of the architect Erich Mendelsohn: creation and destruction within the context of Berlin.
Two metal plates, one hanging above the other: one shows an aerial image of three buildings, the other a single colour. The images, taken from the American army archive, are part of a 1943 experiment for which Mendelsohn, then in America, had an advisory role. Using his experience as an architect in Berlin, the American army constructed life-size versions of Berlin tenements to learn how to efficiently destroy them.
The Mendelsohn Foundation in Berlin supplied the artist with monochrome colour samples from archived original plans that Mendelsohn developed for his 1920s Berlin buildings.
