Katherine defied racial prejudice and gender bias to become a daredevil stunt pilot during the Golden Age of Aviation in the 1930s when less than one percent of all pilots were women.

“I wasn’t interested in being in the kitchen like women were expected to do. I wanted a life filled with adventure.” ~Katherine Sui Fun Cheung

She flew into American history as one of the first Asian women on record to earn a pilot's license in the United States.

Help us bring her adventure to audiences around the world by making a donation and supporting our docu-series project.

Here's our Aviatrix pitch video from Asian American Film Lab President Jennifer Betit-Yen.

Katherine's accomplishments have become a forgotten part of American history.  We want to acknowledge and pay tribute to her story.

So now we've launched a crowd funding campaign to create a fun new docu-series that will bring Katherine's story into the light and inspire audiences across the world to persevere in pursuit of their dreams.

Thanks to Indiegogo, you can take the initiative by donating to our project and making this amazing historical project happen!

Here is actress/musician Katherine Park with a special thank you message

Check out this Union Bank promo honoring Katherine's accomplishments.

What We Need

Our goal is to raise at least $15,000 to cover our primary production costs for the documentary film and web series plus related expenses.

By Hollywood standards, $15,000 is a micro-budget.  The average Hollywood movie easily spends more on their marketing and advertising costs alone.

But thanks to advances in digital cinematography, indie projects such as ours can now utilize cameras like the RED Epic Dragon, BlackMagic Cinema Camera and Canon DSLRs to make our films look like they were shot on a budget 10x what we're asking for in support.

Our cast and crew include some fantastic performers such as Jennifer Betit Yen, Katherine Park and Raymond Ma, who will participate in reenactment scenes and dramatization sequences highlighting some key moments from Katherine's life.

The funds will be spent on production expenses (Please note most of us will not be getting paid, we are volunteers and the professionals that we hire are substantially discounting their usual day rates in order to help us make this project happen.)

All donations are 100% tax deductible. Those donating $250 or more will receive a special thank you letter through our fiscal sponsor From the Heart Productions.

Here are rough estimates for our current production expenses (Please bear in mind this is with substantial discounts and possible in-kind services donated. This also does not include our post production costs for DVD, CD, book manufacturing, film festival submissions, distribution, fulfillment, etc.)

  • Studio / Lighting / Camera Rental costs $2,000
  • Director of Photography fees $1,500
  • After Effects Animation / Video Editor fees $2,500
  • Storyboard Artist / Illustrator fees $2,000
  • Actors / Music Composer fees $1,500
  • Crew Gas / Food costs $1,500
  • Permits / Insurance costs $1,000
  • Historical Research / Archival Film Footage  costs $1,000
  • Vintage Props / Vehicles / Costumes $1500
  • Indiegogo / Fiscal Sponsor / Administrative Fees (4%-7%  of money raised)

Here's a clip of Katherine's daughter Dottie Leschenko talking about her mom's love of flying:

About Our Project

Aviatrix will feature archival footage, video and audio recordings, animation sequences, dramatized reenactment scenes using actors and interviews with aviation historians, family members and friends.

The creators of East West Players Theatre for Youth production "Taking Flight" will talk about how Katherine's life story inspired their work, along with performers sharing an excerpt scene from their stage play.

And the makers of the 1980 USC short film "In the Clouds" will speak about their film project based on Katherine's adventurous life story, along with sharing film clips and behind-the-scenes photos from the set.

Aviatrix will premiere as a web series on Asian American Film Lab's AAFL TV with a documentary feature version to be submitted for film festival screenings and television broadcast, along with the release of a Limited Edition Special Collectors DVD with bonus material as a reward perk for our Indiegogo donors.

We also plan to create a museum exhibition focusing on Katherine Sui Fun Cheung's life, featuring donated family memorabilia, old news clippings, photographs, audio and video recordings, plus a timeline of her accomplishments.

For more info visit our project website: www.aviatrixproject.org

Special thanks to Katherine Sui Fun Cheung's daughter Dottie Leschenko for her generous support of our project, actress/musician Katherine Park, artist Lenore Chinn, the Chinese Historical Society of America, along with Carole Dean at From the Heart Productions and Asian American Film Lab President Jennifer Betit Yen of AAFLTV for partnering with our project.
