What the Story is About
Bad Music is an upcoming short film produced through the New York University, Tisch School of the Arts film program. Our story takes place in 1965 Greenwich Village, where a struggling band of outcasts are forced to prove themselves in a music contest against one of the most popular groups of the time. Set against the backdrop of the burgeoning punk rock scene, our film is an ode to one of the most important eras of popular music, and the very place where it all happened.
A Personal Message From the Director
Dylan. Cohen. Guthrie. Simon and Garfunkel. Hendrix. Springsteen. Velvet Underground. New York Dolls. Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell and James Taylor and Janis Joplin. At one point or another the names that revolutionized rock and roll all passed through one central hub - Greenwich Village. The very place that, fifty-some years later, I now call my campus. Leaving class at NYU, I can make the five minute walk to MacDougal Street and notice what changed. Gerde's Folk City is gone. So's the Gaslight and CBGB. Some things stay the same, but by and large it's clear that most people have moved on.
I however, never failed to be completely enamored by the ground I'm walking on. Ever since I came to NYU, I told myself that I couldn't leave until I made my Greenwich Village movie. I wanted to take everything that I felt about this place, and all the history that had long been paved over, and recreate it on the screen. I wanted to live in that era for a bit, even if it was just through a movie. Thank you for helping making that movie possible.
What the money will be used for
It's no secret that making a period piece is expensive. Maintaining the authenticity and aesthetic of the time period is obviously something that is very important to us, which means that we require some specific but necessary expenses.
If you choose to donate to Bad Music, your money will be going to:
-Location: Nearly the entirety of the film takes place in a classic Greenwich Village music club, an ode to places like Cafe Wha, or the Bitter End. A majority of our budget will be used for securing a space that still retains the look and feel of the 1960's.
-Production Design: Our actors need to look like they just came from 1965. That means that we'll need authentic costume pieces and hair stylings from the era, as well as posters, props, and other set decorations that will sell the look of the film.
-Music: We are excited to be featuring original music in our film, composed and performed by local artists emulating the style of the '60's bands. This portion of our budget will be used for compensating our musical talent, and renting musical instruments of the period.
-Food/Crew Expenses: Lastly, our crew needs to eat! A good amount of our budget will be spent on crew expenses, such as food, craft services, and transportation.
