BAKERY HILL – AN AUSTRALIAN REBELLION
Who Are We?
We are Yellow Line Productions, a not-for-profit association dedicated to telling original Australian stories through musical theatre.
For we believe that the telling of our stories, in a musically creative context, is the ultimate expression of our connection to ourselves and our culture.
Founded in 2019, our vision is to create and connect Australians with the captivating and unique stories that shaped us as a people, a culture and a nation and then share those stories with the world.
Through YLP we intend to create a platform that allows and facilitates the telling of all Australian stories from all perspectives, ethnicities and backgrounds.
We believe that only through diversity, can we truly encompass the depth and scope of our Australian stories.
About Bakery Hill:
Bakery Hill – An Australian Rebellion is a new and original musical and is the flagship production for Yellow Line.
The show conveys the dramatic and moving account of the people and events of the Eureka Rebellion in 1854.
It is a story that many Australians are familiar with, some riotous male diggers stand up to an oppressive government and sacrifice their lives for liberty and freedom.
A classic and cliché revolutionary story wouldn’t you think?
What if I told you that most Australians know less than a quarter of the story and even that quarter doesn’t convey the whole truth.
What if you knew that a number of women fought alongside the men at Eureka?
What if you knew that to this day, their names are not recorded nor remembered?
What if you knew that the diggers were representatives of every continent on earth; every creed, class and colour standing together?
What if you knew that only a single person who died was actually born in Australia?
Would these facts challenge what you think you know about the story?
Until we began the research and creation of this story, we were all where you are now.
We have a story to tell; brimming with depth and detail, challenging and retelling the narrative, remembering and exhuming the lost and forgotten.
Does it still feel like a cliché revolutionary story? Do you feel like it is still a story you know?
Let us take you to Bakery Hill and under the light of the Southern Cross we will tell you what really happened.
Why We Need You?
We genuinely believe that Bakery Hill is a story that needs to be told, but like those at Eureka, we cannot do it alone.
The effects of Covid-19 have impacted our ability to fundraise, cut our potential ticket sales by 50% and increased our costs due to the requirement for PPE and various precautionary measures to rehearse and perform safely.
Despite the challenges presented by Covid-19, we believe that live theatre connects us all in a time when many have felt disconnected, brings us together in a time when many feel isolated and gives purpose to the thousands of artists and creatives who have felt lost and adrift due to the wide ranging effects of Covid-19.
We feel like there has never been a more crucial time to reconnect, rebuild and share our stories with each other.
With your help and support we will can:
- Provide crucial work and opportunities for many creatives.
- Provide Bakery Hill - An Australian Rebellion as an educational resource for students & schools across NSW and Australia to assist educators & students in connecting with content surrounding the Eureka Rebellion.
- Support venues to provide financial assistance through bookings and ticket sales.
- Provide meaningful, quality connection, cultural experience and entertainment for the general public.
- Share this important story from our past, a story that bears great relevance to our modern society, politics and culture.
- Through collaboration and cross promotion, encourage and foster the recovery of the arts and many affiliated industries.
How We Plan To Use Your Donation:
We are looking to raise a total of $7,000 AUD.
These funds will allow us to expand the quality and duration of our production season resulting in the following:
- A full studio recording of the production with the original cast which can then be made available to you, the public and as a resource for others who wish to produce the production in the future.
- The funds raised will allow us to produce high quality and historically accurate props and costumes to museum level quality, producing the most truthful and educational rendition of the story to date.
- A complete video recording of the final production. The funds raised will go a long way to allowing us to produce a professional video recording of the live performance which we can use as promotion for future Yellow Line projects, as a resource for others wishing to produce the production and as a potential means of sharing the show with audience member who may miss out due to Covid-19 restrictions.
- Due to restricted funds and the impacts of Covid-19, Bakery Hill is currently set to run for a limited season of 5 shows. With additional funding we have the option of extending the production season or hosting a second season.
- Your donations will assist us in providing the safest possible environment for our personnel and for our audiences by allowing us to invest in the best quality personal protective equipment (PPE), disinfectant products and safety measures.
- If we raise over our target amount, we will have the option of hosting a specialised educational season for primary and secondary students. Assisting students in a range of subjects including; History, English and Drama to better understand and connect with the story of Bakery Hill and learn about the full creative process. This will be achieved through curated Q&A sessions after each show with the cast and creatives.
Every donation made will help us provide more work for creatives and tell both the story of Bakery Hill and future stories to the quality and standard that they, and you, deserve.
The Challenges
The primary challenge we need to overcome is the unforeseeable impacts of Covid-19.
No one has to ability to know what the future will hold for April 2021 and although taking every precaution and preparation we cannot predict the unpredictable.
So here are some of the things we are doing to help keep all of us and your investment safe:
- Open and regular consultation with our venue – Through a strong venue relationship we are able to continuously assess the situation and risks to preserve the financial interests of all involved.
- If the production is required to cancel or delay to align with restrictions, we have an extensive system of asset protection and storage. This means that almost all of the material we create for the show (set, props, costumes, promotional materials) can be stored at no cost and reused at a later date to mitigate the financial impact.
- If you wish to learn all about how we are managing the risks of Covid-19 you can view our Covid-19 Safety Plan on the Yellow Line Theatre website.
