SUMMARYMy name is Jessica Chappe and I am a Photography Major at Bard College. This indiegogo will help me fulfill my senior thesis exhibition. My Senior Thesis Project is called Personal Utopias: passion projects that are creating a growing vision through collaboration.

KINGSTON MODEL TRAIN CLUB (photo credit Jessica Chappe)

I was raised in two communities that I consider my utopias. They have made me who I am today. They give me peace of mind and allow me to feel at home. Home, in the sense of physically feeling safe, comfortable, and alive—letting go of a façade and truly being authentic. Once I have graduated I would love to find my own passion project where I feel like I am making a difference; maybe not in the grand scale of things but through human connection and creativity. This is why I am on the look out for these personal utopias; because I want to learn what it takes to create a piece of my heart. This project is meant to celebrate what people can make through alternative visions.

This project is aimed to find a spectrum of utopian environments and communities. So far I have photographed the:

  • Kingston Model Train Club
  • the Longspoon Collective (in Saugerties)
  • Bike Kill (in Brooklyn)
  • a meditation dome in the woods (in Pine Plains)
  • a family of campers (Ontario)
  • a 3-year-old’s fairy themed birthday party (in Hudson)
  • a medieval reenactment (in Kingston)
  • the Matt Bua’s B home (in Catskill)
  • Slab City, CA
  • Biosphere 2, Tuscon, AZ
  • Paolo Soleri's Arcosanti in AZ
  • Green Gulch Zen Center, Muir Beach, CA
  • Salvation Mountain, CA
  • Joshua Tree, CA
  • Camphill
  • Melody Africa
  • Oral History of Female Drummers
  • Earthdance
  • And more to come!

I am recording interviews, am creating a sound piece, as well as a sculptural piece.-a Geodesic Dome! The vision for this project is to make an experiential immersive gallery presentation for the viewer through exhibiting the variations within utopian communities and environments.

What I Need to Finish My Project

Even though I have a good start on my project I need the ability to travel and be able to expand my project as much as possible, and then print and frame my images. I am still deciding on places to visit depending on funding. The detailed list needed for travel is below, including the expenses needed to finish the gallery show.

REVISED Description & Breakdown of Expenses

    • Materials for sculptural element. $150
    • Zoom H4n 4-Channel Handy Recorder: I bought a used sound recorder to aid me in recording at each community I visit.  $150
    • Required: Create 2 Books for the Gallery Show using: http://www.blurb.com $75 x 2 = $150
    • Required: Paper and Ink costs and framing. (note changes in this budget item- doubled) My cost should be around $1000 for paper and ink costs, $450 for framing but may go over that.  The photography department will charge me for the cost of paper and ink used to complete this project. (some pay as much as $2000, I am careful in my use) .
    • Bread and Puppet in VT http://breadandpuppet.org/about-bread-and-puppet The name Bread & Puppet is derived from the puppet theater's practice of sharing its own fresh bread with the audience of each performance as a means of creating community, and from its central principle that art should be as basic to life as bread.  $50 for gas+ $0 (lodging with friends) = $50
    • Locations I plan to visit: Earthdance- MA, Oral History of Female Drummers-NYC, Folk Art Guild - NY, etc. $100
    • Expenses TOTAL   $2,265

& What You Get

See the PERKS for giving!

(Note: The images in the video above are not the final photographic images that will be in the gallery exhibition though the Kingston Model Train Club will be in the exhibit.)
