Short Summary

The sponsors of the project include;

David Steffen, Jill Kerr, and Laurie Ventry Inglis (Returned Peace Corps Volunteers RPCVs), Said Makoudi (Sports Association of Goulmima), Morocco Ministry of the Interior (Goulmima Municipality) and LaRissa Connett, (Peace Corps Volunteer, Goulmima, Morocco).

Through fund raising and in collaboration with the Goulmima, Morocco Municipality, Sports Association, and current Peace Corps volunteers, this project aims to construct a safe, modern, outdoor regulation-size basketball court, superior to others in the Goulmima region, in southeastern Morocco near the edge of the Sahara, and to establish the annual "BIG," the Bill Inglis Games national basketball tournament.

Since 1975 Goulmima has been a site for Peace Corps volunteers (PCVs), who have been integral in the town’s basketball’s growth and legacy. Over the past four decades PCVs have coached and played with the Goulmima youth teams, which carry on the traditions and passion for basketball from their elders.

In the late 1970’s “Golden Era,” PCVs played on Goulmima’s town team, which advanced to the national level. Bill Inglis (1953-2013), affectionately nicknamed "Big Guy" in Morocco, was one of those players from 1977 to 1979.  This project is partly to honor him and his life of service on and off the basketball court.

Please view attached photos and documents for more information.

Plan

Goulmima’s municipality has donated the land for the court, which located within the Hassan II stadium and will help secure the court with fencing within the stadium (see attached Google map). They also will provide waste removal services (see attached contract).

The contract for court construction will be between Goulmima Sports Association and a Casablanca company specializing in modern basketball courts. Mr, Makoudi and Ms Connett, located in Goulmima, will serve as the company’s local contacts and the project’s quality assurance agents.

Once funding is secured construction work will be done in phases, with payments made accordingly. Drs. Steffen and Kerr (RPCVs Goulmima 1978-79) will serve as the project’s fiscal agents and assure electronic transfer of Indiegogo funding to vendors throughout the process.

The inaugural Bill Inglis Games will be held in Goulmima during Morocco’s schools’ spring break in April, so students from outlying provinces may attend. During the first BIG, transportation, food and housing will be paid by Indiegogo funds. Some housing will be provided in local dormitories. It is anticipated that within the first 5 years of BIG, the event will become self-sustaining. Additional stadium seating, lighting, printing, and portable score board for BIG are dependent on Indiegogo funding levels.

After BIG, the court will be maintained and secured by the Sports Association and municipality and provide a place for youth and adults to play. The vision is that BIG will be an annual event, and over time will contribute to the local economy.
