A Queer Giallo Short Film
Bath Bomb is a proposed short film written by Michael Clifton and directed by Colin G Cooper with the intention of establishing a Queer approach to the cinematic subgenre known as Giallo.
It’s about Jordan and Grant. Jordan is a sullen doctor with a refined manner. Grant is his beefy himbo boyfriend. Jordan prepares an ostensibly romantic bath for Grant, but it takes a disturbing turn after Jordan reveals that he knows Grant has cheated on him.
There’s delicious violence, sexy man flesh, and a judicious amount of campy humour.
Giallo is a hybrid cinematic subgenre developed in Italy in the late 60s and early 70s that served as a direct precursor to the American Slasher. The subgenre is known for its elaborately choreographed scenes of violence and eroticism that might best be described as the perfect intersection of arthouse and grindhouse.
Though Giallo was often dismissed as mere exploitation by contemporary critics, the subgenre was crafted by some of Italy’s most legendary talents. Global cinematic icons such as composer Ennio Morricone, cinematographer Vittorio Storraro, and directors Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci helped shape GIallo’s signature look, sound, and atmosphere.
Through landmark films like Deep Red, A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin, and Blood and Black Lace, Giallo’s unique visual language inspired and influenced countless filmmakers beyond Italy’s borders, including the likes of David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, Edgar Wright, David Cronenberg, and James Wan.
Giallo has a bit of a troubled relationship with the queer community. On one hand, many of the subgenre’s flamboyant aesthetic trends have had a huge influence on queer cinema. On the other hand, the subgenre’s treatment of queer characters has garnered heated criticism from academics, critics, and the queer community at large.
Given that the majority of Giallo films were made in the late 60s and early 70s, they actually had an unusually large amount of queer characters. However, the way these characters were presented was pretty troublesome. In particular, queer men.
Queer men were typically given little to no narrative license. At best, they were relegated to comedic relief, serving as an effeminate counterpart to the heterosexual male protagonist, and eventually killed off. At worst, they were cast as the killer, or red herring suspect, often with a not-so-subtle subtext of pedophilia.
Our aim is to turn this history on its head. Bath Bomb features queer men acting with agency in their own narrative, while sending up common queer stereotypes in a playful, tongue-in-cheek manner.
Bath Bomb is partially funded, but we need your help to raise the rest of the money necessary to bring this project to life.
Our base goal is to raise $25,000. This is the minimum amount of funds we need in order to complete all phases of production. Our intention is to shoot in late spring and premiere on the genre festival circuit this autumn.
65% of the campaign’s funding will be invested in the production of the actual film. This includes all elements of pre-production, production, and post-production.
15% of funds will be held for fulfillment of our campaign perks. This includes production of our physical perks (t-shirts, posters, and vinyl), as well as expenses related to throwing our two producer wrap parties.
10% of funds will be held for shipping and handling costs for both domestic and international packaging. We expect physical perks to start shipping before the end of this year (2023).
10% of our funds will go toward our Indiegogo hosting, processing fees, and taxes.
Although $25,000 is technically enough to complete Bath Bomb, in order to fully execute our vision of the film on a level that truly does justice to the aesthetic standards of the finest entries in the Giallo catalog, we need to raise a significantly higher stretch goal.
As you’ll see in our Team section below, we’re pulling together some top-notch talent for this project, and we’d love to be able to provide them with the kind of high-end equipment and resources that will allow them to operate at their fullest potential. Special effects, prosthetics, and vintage production design are also key elements of this project. The more money we raise, the better quality these elements will be.
Our ultimate goal is to fill all of our onscreen credit perks, for a total gross of $61,500. Anything raised beyond that will go toward funding our festival run, and increase our ability to share Bath Bomb with horror lovers in the sacred sanctuary of darkened cinemas around the world.
We want to create something so sassy and delicious that Giallo legends like Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci can’t help but smile upon us from beyond the grave, and earn the respect and admiration of surviving Giallo masters like Dario Argento and Sergio Martino. These aspirations don’t come cheap :)
All of our onscreen credit perks come with:
Our director, Colin G Cooper, will also record a personal “thank you” video from the seductive comfort of his very own sudsy bathtub, and post it on our official social media accounts (or send it to you privately, if you'd prefer).
The poster and digital bundle are also available individually. The poster, digital bundle, and t-shirt are available as add-ons to any order that doesn't already include them.
All of our producer credit perks (Associate Producer, Co-Producer, Producer, and Executive Producer) also come with an invitation to one of our wrap parties. We will be hosting two wrap parties; one in Toronto, the other in Los Angeles. Travel expenses are not included in these perks. Dates and venues to be determined.
Credited producers will also be added to our production mailing list, through which they will receive regular updates on the progress of the project including pre-production, principal photography, and post production.
If you want to support Bath Bomb but can’t afford one of our pricier perks, for a $10 contribution, we’ll follow you on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter from our official accounts, and give you a “thank you” shoutout in our stories.
We’re honored to have acclaimed musicians Theresa Wayman (of celebrated indie rock band Warpaint) and her talented, Grammy-nominated, multi-instrumentalist brother Ivan Wayman composing the score for Bath Bomb. We also realize that some of you might be here primarily because you’re TT fans, Warpaint fans, or both. That’s why we’re offering a vinyl single of the score as its own separate perk. This will be the only physical release of the score, and is available exclusively through this campaign.
The vinyl single is available in two versions:
A $30 standard version (final artwork TBD, but based on our poster)
A $50 limited edition version, signed by Theresa & Ivan, with alternate “Giallo all'italiana” artwork, individually numbered from 1 to 100 (final artwork TBD)
The standard version is also available as an add-on to any order.
