I am a Blind man who has completed training and am trying to start my own business as a "Social Security Disability Advocate". I've been trying to launch my business but I have been facing much resistance from the California State Department of Rehabilitation in supporting my career path as a self-employed
Blind person.

For over 2 years I have been dragged along by people not wanting to help me to become self-supporting and self employed. I do not want to collect Social Security benefits for the rest of my life. These people are doing the exact opposite of what the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) was created to do, which is to help the disabled adjust and provide the training needed for a disabled person to enter or reenter the working world with the skills and tools needed to compete competitively with non-disabled individuals.

This profession will maximize my talents and will also help put the DOR in a position that maximizes their skills in helping their clients. With many diverse career fields available, I am trying to utilize my skills and passion to have fulfilling work in a collegial and caring environment. I'll know that every day I wake up I'll be able to go to work helping disabled people to stabilize their lives by being an advocate for them in front of Social Security.

Under Article 22: “States Parties recognise the right of persons with disabilities to work, on an equal basis with others; this includes the right to the opportunity to gain a living by work freely chosen or accepted in a labour market and work environment that is open, inclusive and accessible to persons with disabilities.”

Being able to represent the Disabled community in front of Social Security will allow me to know that I am making a difference in people’s life’s everyday.
