Overview
Love your local beaches ! PLEASE HELP US GROW MORE SAND DUNES ON OUR POPULAR FAMILY BEACH Last year we raised funds for a pilot to protect and grow sand dunes on our popular beach. The success has been remarkable -see the before and after photos - Now we need your help to extend the sand-traps that protect the new dunes. £5 buys a post, and £50 a roll of galvanised sheep-fencing and £30 netting for sand traps. Donate using button on the right or see paypal option at bottom.

PLEASE HELP US GROW MORE SAND DUNES ON OUR POPULAR FAMILY BEACH
Last year we raised funds for a pilot to protect and grow sand dunes on our popular beach. We got permission from the Dept of the Environment and from the Council and local farmers who own the beach.

We bought and planted hundreds of native beach plants following the An Taisce guidelines and protected them with tall sturdy posts, sheep fencing and created sand-traps with horticultural netting.

The success has been remarkable and we want your help to extend the sand-traps that protect the new dunes. £5 buys a post, and £50 a roll of galvanized sheep-fencing and £30 netting for sand traps. Donate using button on the right - there is also a Paypal option there as well.

WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE BEFORE OUR PILOT PROJECT
This photo shows what the area looked like before the pilot project - note the bare crumbling cliffs. Notice the bare rocks with no sand and no purchase available for protective screens of plants. Compare this to to the photos above.

The original 2 meter sand traps in the pilot project have been so successful that you can now step over them as less than 500mm is visible above the sand.

We have £250 in the kitty and need another £750 to go another 100 meters. All the labour is voluntary and equipment is lent by local farmers. If we get more than £750 we will be able to protect more of the beach - the road to our village is threatened by the erosion on the beach.

This project is organised by independent Councilor Cadogan Enright a local environmentalist

The project is owned by the Ballyhornan Development Association and  It is supported by the 3 local beach community beach campaigns in Kilclief ,Ballyhornan , Coney Island and Killough .
