Berliner Luft! It's In The Air!
In a new cabaret play about Weimar Berlin, including the French, British and American influences on this time, we follow the story of two New York City burlesque performers as they tire of America and follow their dreams of dancing and adventure to Europe, naturally ending up in Berlin in the 1920s. All told through song, dance, story telling (and a little bit of striptease). Along the way they perform traditional vaudeville burlesque, tableaux vivant, can-can, charleston and experience true 20s Berlin, both glamorous and gritty. There are appearances by stars of the time including the Mata Hari, Claire Waldorf, Marlene Dietrich, Anita Berber, and even Maria from the film Metropolis. The play ends with an audience sing-a-long to Berliner Luft, leaving everyone in high spirits and loving the city.
Immoral Babylon Productions is writing, producing and performing the play. We are a theatrical collective, an international team of acclaimed female performing artists based in Berlin. We are interdisciplinary, bringing to the stage singing, dancing, acting, comedy, and striptease, with the goal of telling the stories of memorable and influential women of our past.
The show is approximately 90 minutes with two 45 minute sets. The first half is the journey to Berlin and the second half is in Berlin. The show will be performed in English, German and French, with subtitles where appropriate.
How You Can Help
The play is written and we are currently in rehearsals putting the acts together. We need to fund the production for the first performances. We are planning a preview performance in September 2014, and the Premiere in November 2014 with the goal to do at least a 6 night run after the premiere.
In July 2013 we had a successful fundraising show "The Mad Money Honey Show" which raised the initial funds needed to start the project. We now need to raise 3000€ for:
- Costumes, props, sets, video projection, music (1500€)
- Venue and equipment rental (1000€)
- Publicity (300€)
- Other expenses (200€)
If we do not reach our funding goal we will try and supplement this funding with other funding opportunities and prioritise our expenses. If necessary, we will produce a smaller scale version of the play for our initial production, the show will go on!
If we exceed our funding goal, then we will be able to increase the quality of the costumes, props and sets, and provide additional performances!!!

Our Goal
We are focused on female empowerment; the cultural and societal impact of earlier eras; innovative theatre performances; historically researched and inspired performance; and the development of eroticism, on stage and off, throughout history that led the way for feminism in Art and Culture today.
Many people have forgotten the cultural legacy and social mentality left behind by the Weimar Republic era in our contemporary art and societal behaviour. We want to explore the women of this time. Who they were? How did they get there? Where we can see their footprints in today's art and society? We seek to answer these questions in our play.
We are bringing these historical women to life by portraying their stories and focusing on their eroticism and pioneering acts. Our play relates their stories to sexuality in the performative arts around the world from the 2nd half of the 19th century until the end of the Weimar Republic (1933), a period in time that opened the door for the liberation of the body and democratization of sexuality.
We debuted one of the dance pieces, The Can-Can, from the play at the Berlin Burlesque Festival, in September 2013.
