Short Summary
Update: Biological Modeling: A Short Tour has now been published due to the gracious support of its backers! This campaign has closed, and you can find the book now at Amazon.
From the co-creator of Rosalind and Bioinformatics Algorithms comes a new education project.
Have you ever wondered why zebras have stripes? Have you ever wondered how your cells can quickly react to their environment and perform complex tasks without intelligence? Have you ever wondered why the original SARS coronavirus fizzled out but SARS-CoV-2 has spread like wildfire around the planet? Have you ever wondered how algorithms can be trained to “see” cells as well as a human?
What these questions share is that they can start to be answered by modeling biological systems at multiple scales of resolution, from the microscopic to the molecular.
This project serves as a preorder for a print companion to Biological Modeling (http://biologicalmodeling.org), a new open course in biological modeling. This textbook, called Biological Modeling: A Short Tour, will follow the main narrative of this course. Please check out our course website if you are interested in learning more!
What We Need & What You Get
We have already reached our funding goal on Kickstarter. We are using IndieGogo to help us continue to provide an opportunity to pre-order Biological Modeling: A Short Tour in advance of its publication in late 2022.
The Impact
The primary author on the work, Phillip Compeau, has over a decade of experience in building online education projects that have reached hundreds of thousands of learners worldwide, most notably Rosalind and Bioinformatics Algorithms. It is our hope that Biological Modeling can have as much impact and can help educate the next generation of scientists in biological modeling.
Risks & Challenges
The textbook will be produced from the main narrative of Biological Modeling (http://biologicalmodeling.org), which is already complete. Furthermore, the book has already been funded by our Kickstarter Campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/phillipcom...), so the book will definitely be printed.
However, it requires time and energy to typeset and print a book, and our challenge is to bring it to you as quickly as possible.
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you aren't interested in this pre-order, you can still help our project succeed!
- Please check out our free website at http://biologicalmodeling.org.
- If you really like the website, please share it! (You can use the Indiegogo share tools too ...)
- And if you love the website and have a website of your own, please link to it. This will help us keep the project visible to search engine.
