For us, Indiegogo is about more that just fundraising - it's also about product validation and creating an active community of early adopters.
Q: How does BioRing calculate my intake of carbohydrates, fats and proteins?
A: Both carbs and fats are used for energy in your body, using two different physiological processes. Fats and proteins are absorbed by the body at a slower pace than carbs and lead to a slower absorption of glucose. They are transformed into glucose using gluconeogenesis, and affect the glucose curve by flattening it.
Conversely, carbs generally cause a swift uptick in your glucose curve. For example, eating a meal rich in fat and protein will take longer for the body to digest compared to a high-carbohydrate meal. BioRing uses a sophisticated mathematical algorithm to analyze the dynamics of your glucose curve and calculate carbs, fat and protein intake, in addition to carbs and fat burn.
Q: When does it start to measure my calorie intake?
A: Approximately 15-20 minutes after you eat, your glucose concentrations start to rise. BioRing detects these changes. You have to wear it at least 15 minutes before eating. It takes BioRing on average 6 hours to calculate your calorie intake from a meal. This number varies depending on your personal metabolism and the food you have eaten.
Q: How does it my measure calorie burn?
A: BioRing uses two components: Basic metabolic rate (BMR) and calorie burn from activity. BMR is determined by the user's input of height, weight, age and gender. Calorie burn from activity is calculated by combining data from the 3 – axis accelerometer and the optical HR sensor.
Q: How does it measure sleep?
A: BioRing measures sleep accurately in four different stages: light sleep, deep sleep, REM and wakeful sleep. It measures the efficiency of sleep by computing the ratio between net sleep time without wake time and the total duration of sleep. The REM phase is the most effective time for waking up. It is identified by showing data from the accelerometer which shows movements during sleep.
Q: How does it measure stress levels?
A: BioRing makes a complete analysis of heart rate data and user input (age, height, weight and gender) to estimate stress levels. This is done once an hour and the results are presented on a scale of 1 – 6.
Q: How does it measure water intake?
A: The bio-impedance sensor is also used for this purpose. The app uses personal info to determine your recommended daily water intake. It determines your hydration levels by considering calories burned and activity levels. Your hydration level is presented as either low or normal.
Q: How precise is the automatic measurement of calorie intake?
A: Tests have been conducted where subjects have worn BioRing while eating precisely measured meals. We compared BioRing's results with the known calorie content of the food. Currently, the margin of error is around 14%. This is superior to other ways of measuring your calorie intake, and we're not done yet! We are constantly improving our algorithms, so expect this number to be even better in the future.
Q: Can BioRing track my calorie intake automatically if I have diabetes?
A: Yes, provided that you take insulin properly to control your blood glucose levels. However, BioRing is not a medical device. It cannot replace regular glucose monitoring and is not designed to measure glucose in the treatment of diabetes.
Q: How is the accuracy of the calorie intake measurement compared with apps that manually let me log my food?
Manually tracking (in fact guessing) your calorie intake is not only impractical, tedious and time consuming, it's also severely inaccurate:
First, it's hard to know the exact amount of ingredients in your food, unless you meticulously weigh it. How much cheese was on that pizza or how much butter in that cake? You have to rely on estimation and guesswork.
Second, even if you exclusively eat labeled packaged food , your calorie intake will vary based on how the food was prepared.
Finally, since we everyone's metabolism is different, calories will be absorbed differently by different people.
