Bird Keeper is a fantasy drama about a little fearless girl named Lumen who wakes up in a world built by her own subconscious mind. Will she choose reality or will she stay in a world fabricated of dreams?

The story of the 10 year old Lumen takes place in a world between magical realism and surrealism. Lumen who has been injured in a car accident has lost her memory and goes through a dream therapy to find not only the lost moments of her life but also herself back. On her journey she will grow and learn what it takes to go over to adulthood an that there is never the right time to take this step, but on her way she will reconnect to herself and find out who she is. 

Bird Keeper is in a sense a very personal film for me. It is the journey of the young and innocent character of Lumen who has unimaginable strength when confronted with the decision to overcome the worst and choose real life over ‘’wonderland.’’ Being torn between her mother and her father further complicates her journey as she rises from a child to a young woman. Bird Keeper is thus a story about the connection one experiences through love and the challenge to find inner strength in oneself in order to face life’s realities. Lumens journey is very close to me, as I was a child that didn't wanna let go of the protective childhood bubble, as a kid I thought the world was build for me, being an only child and mostly playing on my own, my imagination was growing everyday and soon I lost a sense of reality and so builded a refugee in a world build up in my mind, a world where the sun was following me wherever I headed to, a world where cities were built just for me to see and a world I didn't wanted to leave. I never understood why Dorothy wanted to find her way back to Kansas or why Alice wanted to find her way out of Wonderland until I understood that this was the transition from childhood to adulthood. It also made me realize that this decision is informed not by spontaneity but rather by a growing awareness about fulfilling life’s cycle.

The Production Design

The Production Design in Bird Keeper plays an important role, we have our amazing Production Designer Nadrudee Prakobkaew working with her Art Director Rachel Groat to create the mythological world around Lumen. While this is a truly challenging project for all of us, we are very confident that our art department can create the surreal environments where Lumens journey takes place. The most ambitious set will be our floral labyrinth made out of thousands of paper flowers, a place where Lumen goes into purgatory to find her inner soul back.

The Visual Effects
The Bird is an important element of the story, it is the guiding point for Lumen and it draws a line through the whole story, not only is the paper bird a present that Lumen once got but it also holds her inner soul that she is trying to rebuild. The Bird will be made using a CG Model and verious Animators will be animating it to bring it to life.

Lumen’s journey resonates within all of us, as we were all once children and believed that we lived in a world that was custom made for us. It is only at that point in time where we finally come to see that the world is, in the words of Michel Charbon “irretrievably broken,” that we grow up.  I hope to see Bird Keeper unfold in all its mythological elements, creating a world that has its own realism to it and to a child, make absolute sense. Lumen will portray a character that should inspire the audience to never give up in life and to find something positive to believe in and to hold on to but she will also teach us how important it is to stay true to oneself.

Within this short film we work with a large team that builded a family over the years and connected us from Thailand to Luxembourg to China, Japan, France, Germany, Austria, to the United Stated and our team is still growing !!! We are working on this project out of passion and love and to see this film become a reality.

The Schedule

We are planning to shoot our film by the end of September, 2015, and finish our Post-Production by January, 2016. Our post production period will include VFX work, which is for all of us a very exciting process and we are very glad that our VFX Supervisor Ethan E.Zhao has joined our team right from the beginning and is guiding us through all the effects that we need to make the magic come to life.

The Distribution

We will do a FILM PREMIERE EXCLUSIVELY in the Bay Area for our EXCLUSIVE BACKERS. Also, we will submit our film to film festivals, and mainly target it into European film festivals due to the style that we are pursuing. Fingers crossed if any buyers or distributors like our film and would buy it so that one day you can enjoy it in a theater near you.

The Risks and Challenges
We will do everything in our power to create this movie, but we need support. This movie is challenging in many ways and we will master that challenge no matter what, we will work with the support and the funds that we get.
However what happens if we don't get all the support we need? Well then it's time to be clever, minimal and practical, in any case, we will make this movie happen! That's a promise!

PLEASE NOTE that for the perks of 1000$ and above the dinner will be happening in San Francisco and so will be the screening, however we do NOT cover travel expenses.
