Hey everyone, I’m Walter- a father, husband, artist, social entrepreneur, & owner of Color Grind, a monthly subscription box that makes it easy to discover and support black businesses. My wife Jeanine is a fantastic wife and mother who also is an artist who quilts, paints, and designs clothing. In addition, we are avid tea and coffee drinkers who have an addiction to fun and interesting coffee mugs.

We created Black As A Mug® because we grew tired of the mugs with the witty or inspirational quotes that often times will disappear after a few good washings. We became passionate about creating our own mugs; not only mugs but functional pieces of artwork that celebrate our culture, our beauty, our brilliance, our creativity, our determination, our resilience, and maybe most importantly, a celebration of us for being so damn dope!
What We Need & What You Get
We are asking for your support to make Black As A Mug® a huge success! Let us tell you how you can help. The following will detail exactly where your donations will go:
Our primary expense will be to have Black As A Mug® mugs produced. Our manufacturer’s minimum is 1000 units per mug design. Our goal is to produce 1000 mugs this first go around.
Other expenses include shipping costs, a thorough inspection of each mug by a 3rd party company to assure that each mug is top quality, warehouse fees, web development, & the server bill. These expenses are itemized here:
Cost of Mugs: $20,000

If we don’t reach our goal, we will use the Flexfunds to continue with the produce and distribution of Black As A Mug®.
So what are the perks? As a supporter, you get the unique opportunity to be the first to receive a Black As A Mug®. As a bonus, this first batch of 1000 mugs will be numbered making these mugs collector’s items.
The Impact
The collective potential impact of this campaign is what we are most excited about! 5% of all proceeds from Black As A Mug® sales will be contributed to creating sustainable and much-needed opportunities within black communities. We see Black As A Mug® as a vehicle to create innovative youth scholarships to support the work that is being done in their community. We also plan to assist scholars in using local data and community needs inquiry build projects that will make the biggest and most positive impact. We believe Black As A Mug® will provide a unique experience that will empower young leaders to be great and our communities to become even greater. We will set up a sister site so you can follow the amazing work and progress that you helped make happen.
Risks & Challenges
There are several hands that Black As A Mug® must pass through in order to be produced. One of the major challenges we foresee in creating Black As A Mug® is that we have no experience with the ins and outs of manufacturing. Although we are learning a lot daily, we are risking a great deal financially to make Black As A Mug® a reality. This venture has taken a great deal of research and money. We have spent the last 6 months identifying talented designers, testing sample proofs, and obsessing over every detail to portray an accurate and respectable image of our legends (who would have thought skin color would a challenge!!).
Please be sure to share this with everyone you know to ensure this project is a big success.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to making a change one mug at a time.
Sincerely,
Walter & Jeanine Logan
