Hello!

We're Sache Primeaux-Shaw and Shana Prince, the founders of the newest bookstore and creative space in Oklahoma City--Black Lit. This bookstore will be based in Northeast OKC which is the predominantely Black area of town. It is a culturally rich area of town and we would love to honor that culture by having this space.  It can serve as a space for Open Mic poetry nights, panel discussions, book signings, book clubs and more. It will also be a safe space for children!

Growing up, we did not have a bookstore in our community. Shana and I are both lovers of books and our families would have to drive across town in order to find bookstores. We also did not have very many safe spaces growing up. The library was the only place in the community that was a safe space.

All we need is your support to make this idea a reality! So please support and spread the word.

  • For this project, we will need approximately $20,000. We will need funding for the rental space, renovations (if needed) and licenses.
  • These funds will also go towards the purchase of books and other items for the store. We are also looking towards having a space for a coffee shop with Wi-Fi so that will be added into the expenses. We will start small.
  • If our goal is not reached, we will budget accordingly for our expenses most needed in creating the space and look for other avenues for funding.

This project is important because Northeast Oklahoma City has a rich culture in it's own right. There are several important landmarks that exist there including the OKC NAACP Youth Council center, Douglass High School, the first Black high school in Oklahoma, as well as the Ralph Ellison Library named for the famous author and product of the Harlem Renaissance. This bookstore can also serve as a safe space for the youth and college students that live in this area of town as well.
With any new project, there will be risks and challenges. With ours, the main one will be maintaining funding and support.

If you are unable to support financially, we would love for you to share our story with your friends through your social media venues!
