Black Women Are
Black Women Are is an attempt to capture ideals of Black femininity and womanhood from incredible and inspiring Black women from different walks of life The goals of this project are as follows:
- To analyze local, national, and global standards of beauty and how Black women fit into, mold, and recreate them.
- To acknowledge the existence of (or lack of) intersectionality in the Black community. Do we have the opportunity to choose between being Black and being female? What about transgender Black women?
- To provide a glance into the personal lives of Black women and girls in the church, home, and school.
- To understand how art, culture, and music are so intricately intertwined into Blackness, particularly for Black women.
- To study unity among women, unity in the Black community, and specifically unity in the Black female community.
Perhaps we will achieve much more in the process. We would like to allow for other topics to arise, so be sure to let us know if there's something in particular that you would like to see be addressed.
Where are my contributions going?
Here's what we plan on doing with the money:
- Getting a place to stay for out-of-town shoots.
- Renting any equipment we don't already have access to (lights, dollies, shoulder rigs, lenses, the techie stuff).
- Creating posters and DVDs that we can send to all of you!
What is the significance of this project?
Black Women Are is inspired by Black Men Dream by the visual artist Shikeith:
- Like Black Men Dream, Black Women Are contributes to the reclamation of the Black narrative - by Black people. Through this work, we get to tell our own truths, untainted.
- Successes for Black female filmmakers. Most of the crew for this project is composed of Black women. By supporting it, you are giving the opportunity for many Black (female!) producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, etc to thrive in an industry that is predominately white and predominately male.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you can't contribute to this campaign financially but would still like to help, here's a few things you can do:
- Lend us your equipment! This is always appreciated and we'll take wonderful care of it, I swear :)
- Share this campaign with all of your friends. Spread the word about us. Not only are you increasing the chance that others can donate, but you're also getting us some publicity. After all, we want people to see this thing.
And that's the story. We thank you in advance for your contributions. Thank you for helping us #reclaimthenarrative!
