A city is many things, but is perhaps best described by the prolific American writer, Lewis Mumford: The city in its complete sense, then, is a geographic plexus, an economic organization, an institutional process, a theater of social action, and an aesthetic symbol of collective unity. The city fosters art and is art; the city creates theater and is the theater.

Birmingham, it is time to set the stage. Public art is an intervention into space. It’s reclamation of the mundane, and a weapon against the often-demanding voice of advertising. Where you see a blank space, an ordinary wall, we see opportunity. We see a narrative.

Blank Space Mural Project is teaming up with local Birmingham artist Andy Jordan in the creation of one such narrative. With a 7-point gray scale background, a take on the basic television broadcast signal, Jordan’s planned mural for the eastern wall of downtown’s Whitmire Building at 1826 3rd Ave N. is a signifier of Birmingham coming “back into focus.”

We recognize we are not alone in our vision for a more vibrant downtown. We need your help in bringing this vision to the streets of Birmingham. For more information about ways in which you can make the Theatre District mural a reality, please watch the video above.

Too often city streets leave us feeling uninspired. We rush from point A, to point B, attentive only to the obstacles that may be in our way– crack in the sidewalk here, pothole over there. We find our role in the city to be that of a transient nature. We’re 9-5. We’re stopping for a quick lunch, dropping by for a show, or even just passing through to get to the “other side” of town.

When was the last time you lingered downtown, just because? When were you made to feel that there was something in the city created as a simple invitation to pause… a simple reminder that the city is YOURS? We at Blank Space Mural Project want to reclaim public space for you, the public. We want to invite you to think about where we as a city have been, and dream of where we are going. We want you to remember why you love Birmingham, why you chose to invest here, and why you make this place your home. We believe we can achieve these things through the power of public art. It is our goal to create a mural project that inspires you to not just live in the magic of our city, but to BE the Magic.

The narrative of our city is one that is filled with hope. Daily, we step towards a brighter future for Birmingham with new development, redevelopment and future investments. We at BSMP just want to make sure that that future is accessible to everyone.
