The bluefish is considered as the monster of the seas. It is capable of attacking anything smaller than its
size. With its piranha sharp teeth and speed, it is the ultimate hunter of
Bosporus.
Bluefish aggressive and
fast attacks almost any fish undersized, hard to catch. There are stories of careless fisherman that lost fingers or get a good scratch
while trying to release it from the fishing hook. There are even some fisherman
stories in which, bluefish schools chasing hungry dolphins. The documentary is about a fish that had huge cultural influence over a region for thousand years and empires long, which was sadly overfished over the last decades. The fish highly desired
in the region; amazingly nearly 70%
of World harvest is from Turkey & Marmara Sea. The documentary is following
the annual migration of the Blue fish along Bosporus both under and above water
together with the human stories & lives (fisherman, scientist, fish sellers, hobbyist, historians, restaurant owners,
NGO’s, writers, poets, bloggers, reporters) bonded to it. The cultural and economical
importance of the fish for the people is worthless and there is no coming back
from extinction for this incredible species, which sadly means a loss of seamanship/cuisine
culture!

Fisherman with small
boats using traditional fishing methods for hunting bluefish and other fish
species use similar methods for thousands of years in Istanbul.
The meaning of the fish to the people living around Bosphorus
LUFER (Bluefish) is
a glitter in people’s eyes, big time money for the small & big fisherman.
Lufer fishing is an addiction, a daily routine for the retired, unemployed and offtime employer/hobbyists across Bosporus. If you have a chance to travel around
Istanbul coastline a day in October, you can count around ten thousand fishing
roads, day & night. Fish means gathering reason for families & friends, means warm table conversations in restaurants all
around the canal. Lufer means these facts and many more for thousands of years
for the people residing around Bosphorus waters.

Bluefish
sold alive in Bosphorus, the fresher it is the more it is sold!
But with the advancement of the
heavy industry and human population increase since 1950’s the numbers of fish
migrating is diminishing year by year. Some inividuals & NGO’s are trying
to pictures this fact with public awareness campaigns, advertisements, but no
one has ever truly documented the Bluefish migration underwater, the fish caught
in the nets, fishing lines, underwater footage from Marmara Sea and most
importantly; people of Istanbul through the eyes LUFER and Bluefish through the
eyes of its inhabitants.

What We Need & What You Get
We are happy to point that this is not a TV work. This is 1.5 year long underwater documentary project. This means months of travelling, hours of diving and video footage, chasing schools of fish location unknown! Nature productions specifically speaking, underwater documentaries is costly because of the expensive diving gear, lightning equipment, protective housings and diving logistics. Now we need 25.000 $ to complete our production.
The project is past the research and story development
stages. We initiated the production, successfully followed the southerly migration of the fish, attended a scientific research campaign, completed for the 1st round of underwater footage and finished 10 set of interview with people involved. we have around 100 hours of footage in hand.
We need this sum to gather aerial footage of immense fishing fleets over the migrating fish. We need aerial footage of crowded hobby fisherman all around the canal which we need to hire the camera for a week long. We also need slow motion footage from fishing boats, where we think that slow-motion is one of the best ways to express the bond between the fish=people=Bosporus. We will need to hire this expensive camera for a week long. We need to be able to finish our interviews during the northerly migration of the fish, attend another round of scientific field work & fishing campaign and interviewing the fisherman & NGO's. We also need to be able to broaden our underwater footage and capture the fish during its migration together with underwater footage from the region. Historical stock footage is also necessary to depict the historical aspect of the story. We want to discover the specific characters that is involved with this fish for more than 50-60 years.
Another important aspect of the documentary is creating an animation for the passage of fish schools through Bosporus canal. We think that this is the best way to explain the migration of bluefish, bonito, anchovy, sardine, mackerel schools and their dynamics with season, weather, city and human beings & etc. We also want to create another animation on migration routes of bluefish with the recent scientific data from institutes & universities.
I guess there is no need to say that there is post production expenses. We are going to work with the most talented folks for this part and obviously we need a good amount of money for the editing, color correction, sound mixing, original music. There is also a need for the narration of the documentary and its recording ! This documentary is being created for the purpose of reaching vast public audience. It will be send to many festivals worldwide so there is an amount needed for the promotional stuff/marketing, subtitles and festival entries.
We know that there is no need of justification in order to get you guys support and underwater documentary aiming to subject a fish species in danger * its sustainable fisheries but if you look at the perks at the RHS you will see many good reasons to support this campaign!
what do we have for you?
Fish postcards, Tshirts, smart phone application 'Doğa Rehberi', a signed marine guidebook, DVD of the documentary, online screening copy, invitation to bluefish fishing with us on our boat in Bosphorus , invitation to the premier & invitation to our release party, chance to join underwater shootings, UW workshop with the director & UW underwater filming or photography course , a chance to earn credit in roll caption, executive producer & producer credits.
why support us?
One by one fish is disappearing from Bosphorus waters, the narrowest and most productive sea canal in the entire planet. The canal waters are busy in all terms, both underwater and above. Ferry traffic, small boats, water taxis, oil tankers coasters, private boats, fishing fleet. Nearly 20 million people living around, 20 million hungry people ! All that industry, pollution heavy fishing !
We lost bluefin tuna forever from Bosporus and the great white shark chasing it ! We lost lobsters, we lost marlin, we lost Mediterranean monk seal, we lost mackerel
Is BLUEFISH stands the next marine species on line of extinction ?
The stress on the fish migrating is immense
In Istanbul, bluefish is not just a species of fish. But furthermore, it symbolizes
the connection between the city, its sea and its history. Unfortunately, this
symbol may now disappear because of unregulated fishing. Therefore, Greenpeace & the Slow
Food convivial ‘Fikir Sahibi Damaklar’ responds with a ruler, asking for
fishing to be limited to adult bluefish. Their campaigns "How big is yours" & "Lufer koruma timi" was successful to some degree on public awareness, they were able to bring the legal catch size of the fish to 20 cm where the breeding size is 27 cm. During the season 1st year borns, 10-18 cm fish undersized is caught heavily without having a chance to reproduce.

Hundred thousand tons of undersized bluefish is being caught at the Black Sea entrance of the narrow Bosporus canal with technological fish finding devices when the fish is gathered to begin their passage. The chase continues when the fish is inside the canal some boats catching the fish under the legal depth of 24 meters. The coast guard is ineffective for the application of the regulations, government official controls on fish sellers, fishing boats and central fishmarket are scarce! for some reason, the politicians are ineffective and unwilling on correct and just regulations on sustainable fisheries! Just now undersized fish is being caught in the protected Prince Islands of Istanbul. Oppositely no one talks to the fisherman and fishing fleets and their opinions on the fact where they spent the entire year in the sea chasing the fish. Probably they know this subject more than anyone involved!
Another important fact is there had only been 2 real scientific research on the fish in the last 100 years. Amazing for a fish species which is culturally & economically this important. But this is changing ! One exciting fact is the film crew is also marine scientist and they are participating in this research. Soon we will know more facts on this fish, which will help conservation of bluefish and creating effective regulations. This documentary is not only targeting one species but all Marmara marine species that are threatened by the impact of human beings. In the Bluefish documentary you will get to discover underwater wonders of Marmara sea which is mostly unknown.

Scientist nearly at all times have problems on describing the important researches to the public. Many efforts, discoveries and innovations are being lost in this translation. I have spent my entire life exploring, researching the seas and sharing what I have seen with others. Much being said, as being a marine biologist and a documentary maker, I like to situate myself in between public and scientists, a messenger whom serves to break the intellectual bridges in between. This is the reason I am producing science oriented underwater productions and I find it significantly important to cover the story of BLUEFISH, where immense debates are occurring in between sides. No one truly looks at the bigger picture and talk to everyone involved and cover the entire story. we value peoples opinions and this is where we stand.
