Our Story

The austrian musician Roland `Mundungaze´ Pickl has been living in Inhambane/Mozambique for five years. Together with his friend the mocambiquan rapper and singer Helio D. Vanimal, they bring us on a musical journey around the region, presenting a stunning variety of passionate music-making. Playing guitar in various local bands and running Studio Bom Dia, the only professional recording-facility around, Roland has become a central figure of the Inhambane music scene. Helio D., having been a professional rapper and having toured Africa and Europe from an early age, is in constant search for traditional rhythms and tunes to integrate into his vision of `Afro-Hip-Hop´. In interviews, conversations, cross - cultural encounters and scenes of everyday life, Roland and Helio give us intimate insight into the life and music of this beautiful region on the indian ocean. Together they have also founded the association Positivo Mozambique, where they use the power of music to raise awareness about the country´s endemic problem - HIV/Aids. Still struggeling with the aftermath of a devastating civil war (1976-1993) Mocambique is burdened with poverty, unemployment, lack of education and a HIV-infection-rate up to 25%. So rather than persueing an international career Roland and Helio combine their talent and enthusiasm for music with social engagement in this remote area of South-East-Africa.

Join us on this journey to real african music off the beaten tracks of an inflationary world-music market. Get into the groove with some remarkable characters such as the Marabenta-playing shoemaker Louis 19 („Dessanove“) or Inhambane´s Reggea-Rasta Prophet Joao Marrime. Meet the Mamas Makaritas a group of elderly ladies singing and shaking off their trials and tribulations. Get to know the legendary Xylophone-Orchestra of Venancio Mbande, join us for spontaneous jam-sessions and freestyle raps and witness a blasting `gig in the bush´ with the local party-band called Skheme Kheme.

The Impact

This film wants to reach a „western“ as well as an african audiance to promote the devoted work of Studio Bom Dia and Positivo Mozambique, their music production and fight against HIV. It aims to strengthen the fragile cultural scene of Inhambane and wants to share and spread the hopeful athmosphere, the groove and peoples lust for life despite all burdensome circumstances. We hope this film will connect Roland Pickl´s and Helio D. Vanimal´s initative with relevant partners from abroad, to support their cultural and social engagement.

What We Need & What You Get

Until now everything on this project has been self-financed. From our several weeks of shooting in Inhambane we brought back approximately 45 hours of great material, shot on a Sony EX3 and several hours of unique field recordings of concerts, jam-sessions, rehearsals and everyday musical encounters, recorded with a 4-track Zoom Hd4 Recorder. After intense work of translating (original material was shot in bitonga/portugues/english and german) and `distilling´ the relevant parts into a stringent narration, we are now in the process of editing.

We need 7000 € (9070 $) to professionally complete this film. Apart from our own work of editing we need to pay for sound-mixing- and -mastering, colour-correction, subtitling and DVD/Soundtrack-CD production.

Please be certain that we will somehow finish BOM DIA INHAMBANE by any means. This is a heart-project ! We are dedicated to the people portrayed in our film, the projects they work on and the music they play. The resources acquired by Indiegogo will of course help us to finish our project faster and more professionally !!!!
