Synopsis

Bookends is a sensitive, short film that follows the character of Ellen, a middle-aged nurse, who is self-conscience, reserved, and likes to stick to the rules. When her husband leaves her for another woman, Ellen finds solace in the friendship with her patient, Callum. Callum is a 20-year old, pop-culture nerd, suffering from a terminal kidney disease. Though he is on the verge of death, Callum remains full of energy and quick wit.
One evening, after a particularly distressing shift, Ellen visits Callum, only to find him drunk. Callum decides to leave the hospital, and feeling a responsibility to look after him, Ellen is forced to go with. The two of them share an intimate moment, which changes the course of Ellen's life.
Bookends will be showcased at the Ryerson University Film Festival in May 2015, with plans to enter it into the international film festival circuit.

Directors Statement

Bookends is a story I've been wanting to tell for a long time. It is based on my own personal experiences dealing with illness and my own mortality. However, there is much more to this film than this one aspect. It also explores the relationship between an older woman and a younger man, and the complexities that can arise when that relationship is based on a need, rather than a want. Furthermore, I was interested in creating a story about finding the beauty within the small moments and interactions of life, and magnifying them to the big screen.

Use of Funds

Your contributions will help ensure that we can successfully make our vision happen. In order to assure that we are able to make this story believable and as realistic as possible we are going to need the appropriate means to achieve this. Your donations will directly benefit our:

Art Department & Locations
Ensuring that all of our sets, props, and wardrobe will be properly outfitted to create an exciting and believable visual aesthetic.

Camera and Insurance
These funds will make sure that we are able to rent the proper camera and accessories to make the film look and feel as good as it possibly can.

Craft Services
Although craft services seems like one of the less important aspects of a film, it often becomes one of the biggest budget eaters (get it?). Help us ensure that our cast and crew are able to stay well fed and hydrated.

Transportation
Transportation will help us rent vehicles to ensure that we can get our crew, actors and equipment to all the locations, and keep our shooting on schedule.
