Importance of Oral Health + Hydration

What's the connection between oral health and overall health?

Did you know that your oral health can offer clues about your overall health — or that problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body? Understanding the intimate connection between oral health and overall health is key to staying healthy.

Taking good care of your mouth, teeth and gums is a worthy goal in and of itself. Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease—and can help you keep your teeth as you get older.  Researchers are also discovering new reasons to brush and floss.  A healthy mouth may help you ward off medical disorders. The flip side? An unhealthy mouth, especially if you have gum disease, may increase your risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, poorly controlled diabetes and preterm labor.*

Like many areas of the body, your mouth is teeming with bacteria — most of them harmless. Normally the body's natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, can keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease.

Why is it so important to stay properly hydrated?

Whether you’re a serious athlete, recreational exerciser, or just trying to stay healthy, it’s important to make sure you get the right amount of water before, during and after exercising. Water regulates your body temperature, lubricates joints and helps transport nutrients for energy and health. If you’re not properly hydrated, your body will be unable to perform at its highest level, and you may experience fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness or more serious symptoms.

Water is life.  You need water to eliminate toxic substances, produce digestive enzymes, maintain healthy skin, hair and organs, and to help your body absorb essential vitamins, minerals and natural sugars.  Water also regulates body temperature, stimulates metabolism and helps promote regularity.  Fluids other than pure water don’t act the same as water in your body, and they don’t meet your needs for hydration like water does.  Most people are slightly dehydrated from relying on other fluids besides water for their fluid intake.  Coffee, tea, alcohol, sodas (or any other caffeinated beverages) don’t count; they’re diuretics, which means they actually remove water and nutrients from the body.
Chronic dehydration has been linked to the following symptoms and disease processes:  Fatigue, constipation, headaches, indigestion, muscle and joint aches and pains, high blood pressure, depression, allergies, lack of mental clarity, skin issues and excess weight.
Introducing Breathometer Mint

Introducing Mint™- the worlds first portable Breath Quality and Hydration level detection product.  Simply place Mint in your mouth, let it automatically draw a sample of the air in your mouth and within seconds the Breathometer app on your smartphone will let you know the quality of your breath, as well as how hydrated you are.

How do we measure Breath Quality?

Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) are created by anaerobic bacteria biofilms in the mouth.  VSCs can be elevated by certain foods and beverages you consume and may also indicate gum disease and tooth decay.  In all cases, elevated VSCs can reduce breath quality and increase social anxiety about your breath.

(Our Breath Quality Sensor is measuring: Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercapthan and Hydrogen Disulfide levels in parts per billion)

How do we measure Hydration?

Detecting hydration levels in the mouth is accomplished by measuring the moisture level of your mucus membrane - which is the first place where dehydration symptoms occur.  The importance of maintaining hydration levels for optimal health and wellness continues to grow.  Mint detects hydration where it first shows signs of impact.  Certain medications can also cause dry mouth- or oral dehydration.   Mint provides information about the state of oral hydration and allows you to track hydration level trends and will present recommendations on how to improve your overall hydration goals.

Risks, Challenges & Where We Are

We are building a product that has never been made available to consumers before!  There are clinical systems available for dentists and labs like the Halimeter®-which like the Mint™, measures VSCs in parts per billion to assist dentists in treating halitosis with their patients during office visits.  Breathometer is combining this sensor technology in an ultra-portable product with hydration detection to provide consumers with the ability to better manage their overall breath quality and hydration levels.

We know the sensors in Mint™ work, the information is relevant and that the data is actionable.    Prototype Mint products are already in use in our lab, where we are refining sensor calibration and testing different hydration and VSC settings.  We need some active Beta Program Members to assist in refining our detection settings, evaluate in different environments, recommended actions and additional features in our application.  We expect to be shipping direct customer orders in January 2016.  Beta program members will start receiving Beta samples by May 2015.

Company Story

The Breathometer team successfully launched their first product -- the Original Alcohol Breathometer on Indiegogo in March 2013!  The Original Breathometer got us started and opened the door to pitching all 5 Sharks on Shark Tank later that year. Following the lead of our original Indiegogo supporters – all five Sharks supported our vision of using sensors and breath detection to help people make more informed decisions and to live healthier lives.

With two products now on the market addressing Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) detection with the Original Breathometer and Breeze™ the wireless and wearable breathalyzer- we are ready to address a totally new category!  Introducing Mint™, a Breathometer to detect Breath Quality and Hydration levels!  Key indications of your Oral Health and overall wellness!

The Breathometer Team

Breathometer In The Press

"Breathometer already has a highly-accurate BAC breathalyzer on the market called the Breeze, and the company's repurposed that same technology for the MINT.”

-Andrew Liszewski

Gizmodo

"The latest product from Breathometer — the company that brought us a clever Bluetooth breathalyzer in 2014 — functions as a wireless breath vacuum that gives you a real-time evaluation of your oral hygiene and hydration. It’ll also offer advice on how to improve them. “

Frequently Asked Questions

> What is Breath Quality really measuring?

Our Breath Quality Sensor is measuring: Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercapthan and Hydrogen Disulfide levels in parts per billion

What is the Beta Program?

We are looking for 200 people to test our product before it is released.  This program will provide participants with pre-production products and early versions of our Breathometer app for the Mint product.  Beta Participants will be required to execute a Non-Disclosure agreement and provide regular feedback on their product experiences.  At the successful completion of the Beta Program, each participant will receive a final production Mint product with the return of their Beta Mint Product.  Beta Participants will need an iPhone 5 or newer. The Beta program will not support Android- prior to shipping final products in January.

When will Mint ship?

We expect to fulfill all orders by January 2016.  Our Beta Program will start in May 2015 and if all goes as expected, we may be able to ship final products before January.

> How is the Mint Powered?

Mint is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery, that supports 7-10 days of normal use (4-5 tests a day) on each charge.  Recharging is supported through a standard micro USB cable connected to a powered USB port.

Does Breathometer Mint require FDA Registration?

Mint will require the same medical device- Class 1 clearance requiring  FDA Registration.  The same clearance obtained for all prior Breathometer products.

Does what I eat effect breath quality?

In short — yes it very well can.  However, not all foods and beverages effect the VSCs we are measuring.  Onions, Garlic and other foods naturally can impact the VSCs immediately after eating, as well as hours later.  Items like cigarette smoke do not necessarily impact VSC levels directly — so those would not be detected.

What smartphones is Mint compatible with?

The Breathometer App is available on the App Store and Google Play.   Supporting IOS 8 or newer, running on iPhone 5 or newer.  Android version 4.3 and above.  Specifically supported phones: Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy S5, Nexus 5.
