Overview

A Senior Directing Film written & directed by Julia Tesmond!

Produced by Simone Woronoff!

For Northwestern University :*

Brick House??? Like the Song??? Haha.

BRICK HOUSE is an absurdist dramedy about coming out and coming into your own.

The night after sleeping with a woman for the first time, Sam gets the drastic “I-need-to-let-people-know-I’m-gay” short haircut that sends her into an identity tailspin. After navigating this new heightened reality and experiencing a harrowing encounter on the street, Sam asserts her own unique coming out through a drag king performance to Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London. It is not a good performance.

BRICK HOUSE is being produced through a grant from Northwestern's Advanced Directing for the Screen Module. Each of the ten students chosen for the course must complete a short narrative film over the Fall and Winter quarters of their senior year. The final cuts of these thesis projects then premiere during the final days of class in the Spring.

While the film department does provide each student with initial funding, additional fundraising can help realize these micro-budget projects to their full potential. And in order to create the most visually resonate and exciting film possible, the crew would appreciate any amount of financial help to make the best final product!

WHAT WILL EXTRA FUNDING GO TOWARDS?

Here are some of the specific elements your generous donation will directly fund:

EQUIPMENT RENTAL: We are addicted to dolly shots and anamorphic lenses, and maybe even dolly shots with anamorphic lenses if we got really crazy about it. We'll need to rent equipment from local rental houses, including but not limited to: camera, dolly, zoom lens, lights, more lights, and even more lights.

PRODUCTION DESIGN: We are obsessed to saturated colors and stylized scenery and creating a life-size Big Gulp that would make an ordinary person teeny-tiny when standing next to it. Your donation would make it possible for our art crew to envision unlimited possibilities about how large a Big Gulp could theoretically be!

LOCATIONS: This shoot is location-heavy, including but not limited to: A vaguely Scandinavian coffeeshop, a drag bar, an old-timey barbershop, the exterior of a gorgeous home. As cute and charming as we all are, they will not let us use these spaces for free.

COSTUMES: Wigs. Glitter. Wigs&Glitter. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2 Graphic Tee.

FESTIVAL SUBMISSIONS: Once BRICK HOUSE reaches its final cut, we want the public to see the results of our crew's hard work! And with every festival submission comes a festival submission fee (usually $20-60).

MUSIC USAGE RIGHTS: Warren Zevon will NOT give up the rights to "Werewolves of London" without a fight.

TRANSPORTATION: Gas costs money. U-Hauls...also cost money.

MEET THE CREW:

Julia Tesmond (writer/director) is a senior at Northwestern University studying Radio, Television & Film with a minor in Political Science.  She is passionate about comedy and queer movies, and BRICK HOUSE is her first opportunity as director to combine the two. Outside of class, she directs Northwestern Sketch Television (NSTV), a sketch comedy group that film over 40 sketches a year, most of which feature green screen or something foul. Her favorite things are Linda Cardellini's performance in the live-action Scooby Doo, a crisp craft beer, sensible button-ups for all occasions, and the internet in 2014.

Simone Woronoff (producer) is a senior at Northwestern University studying Radio, Television & Film and Statistics. She is excited to help bring BRICK HOUSE to the screen. Outside of class, she writes for Northwestern Sketch Television (where she enjoys terrorizing Julia with sketches that are too difficult to film) and The Blackout — Northwestern, a quarterly comedy talk/variety show. Her favorite things are Jeopardy, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, and drinking crisp craft beers with Julia.
