What's it about
For 10 years I have accompanied Arahmaiani with the camera, I was with her in Indonesia and India, on Sylt, in Berlin, in Passau and at the G8 summit in Rostock.
Now, in July and August I would like to accompany her to Tibet and once again to Indonesia.
I need your support.
Why Arahmaiani?
She is an icon of the contemporary art scene and a symbol of a person who engages creatively and entirely non-violently with global society, while living her convictions, aims and ideas courageously. Through her provocative performances, installations and texts she took on the military regime as well as the radical Muslims. She was threatened, detained and held under arrest. Again and again, she had to leave her country. Friends and members of her group were beaten up, disappeared or even murdered. For almost 30 years she has moved through the world like a nomad. She builds networks and teaches at various universities. Her performances and exhibitions have been shown in 29 countries, and have been exhibited at seven biennales.
Why Tibet?
Deeply moved by the 2010 earthquake in Yushu, Arahmaiani followed an inner voice to climb to the Tibetan Plateau – alone. She had not been invited, nor was she representing a particular organization.
She was accepted heartily by the monks of the monastery there and she stayed. Despite the dramatic beauty of the nature, however, she soon became aware of the severe extent of the environmental problems there. Rivers and streams had dried up and there was rubbish everywhere.

Due to its huge glaciers, the Plateau is also known as “the Third Pole” or “The Water Tower of Asia”. This is where the seven greatest rivers of Asia originate, that supply two billion people with water. As a result of constant global warming and the enormous melting of the glaciers, huge floods and erosion, as well as an expansion of the desert, have occurred time and again.
First, by her own example she convinced the monks to set to work and clear away the rubbish themselves. Soon the villagers joined in, and even today rubbish is collected together every Tuesday. More than 200,000 trees and organic vegetables have been planted and the Yak-Bank project has been created. It is a micro-credit system based on loaned animals, supporting the nomadic population.

Why is this so important?
Her work in Tibet and her friendship with the monks there have influenced Arahmaiani's life in such an important way that it must be included in her story.
Like almost no one else, she is able to motivate people and to drive projects forward. I find it fascinating how she deflects attention from herself, instead placing the community in the foreground, and how she overcomes barriers and brings together people of the most diverse cultures, religions and attitudes.
Herself a Muslim and persecuted for years by radical Muslims in Indonesia, she overcame her own pride and fear and reached out to the influential Kyias (Muslim scholars) in order to help people in her temporary home town of Yogyakarta following the severe 2006 earthquake, as well as inhabitants at the foot of Mount Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, after its devastating eruption at almost the same point in time.
I think it is critically important not only to value Arahmaiani's work and attitude, but also to communicate this as far as possible to the rest of the world, in the hope of emboldening and motivating more people to invest their efforts into their personal environment, and to engage actively for more justice, care and solidarity.
Over the past 10 years I have collected so much footage, both filmed by myself and archive material, that with your help to film once more in Tibet and Indonesia I will be able to complete this important film.

Studied film at the University of the Arts in Hamburg, worked as a lighting technician and has been a camerawoman for film and TV since 1997. "Bambule in Hamburg" was her first independently produced cinema film, made with Timo Selengia in 2003. Her film centers on critical social issues. Worum geht es?
Seit 10 Jahren begleite ich Arahmaiani mit der Kamera, war mit ihr
in Indonesien und in Indien, auf Sylt, in Berlin, in Passau und zum G8-Treffen in Rostock.
Jetzt, im Juli und August möchte ich sie nach Tibet und noch ein mal nach Indonesien begleiten und dafür brauche ich Eure Unterstützung.
Warum Arahmaiani?
Sie ist Ikone der zeitgenössischen Kunstszene und Sinnbild für einen Menschen, der sich kreativ und absolut gewaltfrei in die globale Gesellschaft einmischt und mutig ihre Überzeugungen, Ziele und Ideen lebt.
Durch ihre provokanten Performances, Installationen und Texte legte sie sich mit dem Militärregime sowie den radikalen Muslims an. Sie wurde bedroht, verhaftet und unter Arrest gestellt. Immer wieder musste sie ihr Land verlassen. Freunde und Mitglieder ihrer Gruppe wurden zusammen geschlagen, verschwanden oder wurden umgebracht. Seit knapp 30 Jahren zieht sie als Nomadin durch die Welt.
Sie bildet Netzwerke, unterrichtet an diversen Universitäten. Ihre Performances und Ausstellungen wurden in 29 Ländern gezeigt und sie war auf 7 Biennalen vertreten.
Wieso Tibet?
Innerlich bewegt durch das Erdbeben 2010 in Yushu, strandete Arahmaiani einer inneren Stimme folgend auf dem Hochplateau in Tibet – allein. Sie war weder eingeladen, noch Entsandte einer Organisation.
Von den Mönchen des dortigen Klosters wurde sie herzlich aufgenommen und blieb. Doch trotz der dramatischen Schönheit der Natur, wurde ihr das Ausmaß großer Umweltprobleme schnell bewusst. Flüsse und Bäche waren verdreckt, überall war Müll.

Wegen seiner riesigen Gletscher wird das Hochplateau auch „der dritte Pol“ oder „Asiens Wasserspeicher“ genannt. Hier entspringen die 7 größten Flüsse Asiens, die 2.000.000.000 Menschen mit Wasser versorgen. Durch die stetige Klima-Erwärmung und das enorme Abschmelzen der Gletscher kommt es immer wieder zu massiven Überschwemmungen und Erosionen und zu einer Ausbreitung der Wüste.
Als erstes überzeugte sie die Mönche als gutes Beispiel voran zu gehen und selbst Müll zu sammeln. Schnell schlossen sich die Dorfbewohner an und bis heute wird immer Dienstags gemeinsam Müll gesammelt. Es wurden über 200.000 Bäume gepflanzt, biologisches Gemüse angebaut und das Yak-Bank - Projekt ins Leben gerufen, eine Art Micro-Kredit auf Basis von verliehenen Tieren, um die nomadische Bevölkerung zu unterstützen.

Warum ist das so wichtig?
Die Arbeit in Tibet und die Freundschaft zu den Mönchen dort hat das Leben von Arahmaiani so nachhaltig beeinflusst, dass ich unbedingt darüber berichten möchte. Wie fast niemand sonst versteht sie es Menschen zu motivieren und Projekte anzuschieben. Es ist absolut faszinierend wie sehr sie sich dabei selbst zurück nimmt und die Gemeinschaft in den Vordergrund stellt, wie sie Gräben überwindet und Menschen verschiedenster Kultur, Religion und Einstellung zusammen bringt.
Selbst Muslima, und jahrelang von radikalen Muslims in Indonesien verfolgt, überwindet sie Stolz und Ängste, sucht den Kontakt zu einflussreichen Kyias (muslimischen Gelehrten) um Menschen nach dem schweren Erdbeben 2006 in ihrer momentanen Heimatstadt Yogyakarta zu helfen sowie den Bewohnern, die am Fusse des Mount Merapi, einem der aktivsten Vulkane der Welt wohnen nach dessen fast zeitgleichen verheerenden Ausbruch.
Ich finde es absolut wichtig die Arbeit von Arahmaiani und ihre Haltung nicht nur Wert zu schätzen sondern möglichst weit in die Welt zu tragen, in der Hoffnung Mut zu machen und mehr Menschen zu motivieren sich in ihrem persönlichen Umfeld zu engagieren und sich für mehr Gerechtigkeit, Achtsamkeit und Solidarität einzusetzen.
Ich habe über die 10 Jahre so viel Material, selbst gedrehtes, sowie Archiv-Material zusammen getragen, dass ich jetzt mit Eurer Hilfe diesen Film
mit diesem letzten Dreh in Tibet und Indonesien zu einem schönen Ende bringen kann.

Ich studierte Film an der Kunsthochschule in Hamburg, arbeitete als Beleuchterin und bin seit 1997 als Kamerafrau für Film und Fernsehen unterwegs. "Bambule in Hamburg" war mein erster selbstproduzierter Kinofilm, den ich zusammen mit Timo Selengia 2003 machte.
