Hey guys!  My name is Avery.  I'm a junior studying psychology at the George Washington University, and I'm spending a semester abroad at The University of Cape Town in Cape town, South Africa with a service-learning program.  As part of the program, I am volunteering at Manenberg Primary School, an elementary school in one of the most dangerous townships in Cape Town.

Manenberg is a township that is plagued by poverty, gangsterism, HIV/ADIS, unemployment, drugs, and violence.  The consequences of these issues not only have an effect on the individuals participating in the activities, but also on the children of the community that attend Manenberg Primary.  It is my sincere hope to raise the funds to not only renovate the current eating space in the school, but also to help create a sustainable vegetable garden which will supplement the meager feeding scheme already in place.

There are about 640 students in the school.  The government is only able to provide about 150 school meals.  As such, the 150 meals have to be stretched to feed 640 hungry children.  For most of the students, this fraction of a meal is the only thing they have to eat all day.  The current space in which the children eat is an old classroom that has not been updated since the school's founding in 1969- the flooring is peeling off, the paint is chipping off the walls, everything is covered in chalk and dust, and the furniture in the room is dilapidated.  These children need a safe, clean and healthy environment in which to eat!

What We Need

In order to fully complete this project, we need $2,000 at a minimum.  In the cafeteria, we are looking to put in a new floor, paint the walls, make new curtains to hang over the windows (thanks for all your wonderful help with this already, Grammy!), and hang some educational posters regarding subjects like nutrition and hygiene.  For the garden, we need supplies such as seeds, fertilizer, and gardening tools.

Any contribution will help- the dollar can accomplish more than you might think! $15 can buy a can of vibrant, colorful paint (we decided on using primary colors!) that will light up the cafeteria and make the atmosphere more inviting. $10 can purchase several seed packets, which could help to provide the children of the school with essential vitamins and minerals.

If we (unfortunately) don't reach our fundraising goal- don't worry! The existing funds will still go toward making a difference in the school, just not as big of a difference.

The Impact

By investing in this school project, you are investing in the future of South Africa because aren't today's children tomorrow's future? Your contribution will make a world of a difference to these children.  These are eager, excited, strong, resilient children who, despite the odds, make it to school every day in an attempt to get a better education than their parents received.  They need proper nutrition and a bright, happy place to eat in order to flourish and fully reach their potential!

Other Ways You Can Help
