Bristol Bjj Academy, run by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blackbelt Pedro Bessa, has decided to run a charity 24 hour Grappleathon (where we have a minimum of two people on the mats training at all times) in support of Terere's Kids Project based in Rio De Janeiro. We will be beginning at 7pm on the 24th of October and ending at 7pm on the 25th of October.
Fernando Terere is a multiple time world champion and now spends his time devoted to his social project in one of the favelas (slums) of Rio. The favelas are some of the poorest neighbourhoods in the city and the young people growing up in them are faced with daily struggles such as gang and drug culture. The project offers an alternative to these issues through participation in Jiu Jitsu.
Thus we aim to provide funding to these vulnerable young people, to help them pursue a sport we are passionate about. We have a strong kids team here in the U.K, and can see the benefits it brings to all of our students, in confidence and many other areas. The money will be used both to help cover the basics such as the overheads of the project and training uniforms (referred to as gis similar to those used for Judo), and also with a view to sending as many of the kids to competitions as possible.
Thank-you for taking the time to read this, please support our goal and feel free to check out the Facebook page for Terere's Project.
