How frightening must the world of adult trauma be when perceived through the eyes of a child?

Mood Board

Welcome to Brood

Thank you for your curiosity in our short film. We hope that this cinematic journey of ours can be yours too.

We aspire to look at the world through different perspectives and to humanise the darker aspects of life. Our aim with this film is to portray the viewpoint of a girl exposed to an environment that she is too young to comprehend, in order to better understand the impact traumatic events can have on children.

Early Concept Art

What is it about?

Brood gives us a glimpse into a dysfunctional relationship between a young girl and her mother. It explores the reality of living with an unstable parent; confronting the themes of childhood trauma, mental illness, and what it's like to grow up in a broken home. Our aim is to address the things in life that we are reluctant to talk about, the things that we can barely put into words, and ultimately evoke empathy from our audience.

The Story

Within the confines of an isolated rural home, a neglected daughter and her deeply troubled mother are left to deal with their relationship after the abrupt departure of the father. As Mother becomes more distant, Daughter imagines another Mother for herself, one who is able to meet her emotional needs. However, as things fall apart, Daughter begins to lose touch with reality altogether.

Visual Style

The world of Brood is a physical manifestation of Daughter’s mind – murky, ethereal, and detached. Slow moving and still, but tinged with an ever-looming sense of dread. She’s highly sentimental, and so objects adopt symbolic meaning. Everything is too wide, empty and vast – emphasising her loneliness and vulnerability - or extremely close and intense – her need for intimacy and connection. We have been inspired by filmmakers such as Guillermo Del Toro, Andrei Tarkovsky & Lars Von Trier.

Budget Breakdown

We need help in all departments! You can assist in funding the crucial aspects needed to take us to the completion of our production. The crew have already put in as much as we can and now ask for your contribution (with perks included) to help us top it off.
